Not exactly a "hardwire" of the GPS as I still use a cigarette lighter outlet. But some might call it hardwiring the GPS. Read more ยป

GPS wire old setup

A little hard to see the Edge pod in the ex-ashtray. And its a pain plugging it in every time I get in the truck and then unplugging it when I get out.
(why didn't Ford make one of the 12V outlets switched????)

GPS Mount location

I like it over here because it doesn't take up windshield space. The wires are run under the dash.

GPS wiring1 exposed wires

I used a method given by Bulldog security... cut off the insulation but don't cut through the wire. Open up the strands so you can stick the other wire through.

GPS wiring2 wires wrapped together

Stick the wire to connect through and then wrap it around.

GPS wiring3 wires soldered

Bulldog doesn't say to solder them, but I feel much better with them soldered. This ensures a solid connection that won't rattle loose or anything.

GPS wiring4 wires taped and tied

Since I didn't cut the original wire, I can't use shrink-tube. So I wrapped them with yellow electrical tape and then use a zip-tie to hold the wires together and to ensure that the tape stays on.

12V outlet wired

I soldered the wires to the connectors and used shrink-tube to keep this all sealed up. The positive connector is in the very middle and totally covered by the shrink tube.

GPS wiring fastened

I used a zip-tie to hold the power adapter down so it won't rattle or come loose.

Edge mount location

Now its easy to see the Edge without the GPS power adapter sticking out. And the GPS automatically comes on/off with the truck key!

Edge mount hole in ashtray case

A little off topic... this is the hole I made in the ashtray case to feed the wires through.

(2 wires shown right now as the GPS wire is also feeding through... this was before I added the hidden connector)
