Post Rear Brake Lock Up, Anyone Else?

cloaker mentioned this in another thread but, it was under Transmissions so I thought I'd post this here.

I was turning my truck around the other day, sort of a three point turn, accelerated lightly, braked lightly and the rear wheels locked up. I was only doing 5 or 10 mph and the rear wheels were actually drug a foot or so. It has only happened once but, cloaker mentioned it happened to him at 50 mph in his '97.

I'm confused, with 4wheel ABS I thought this couldn't happen even if I stood on the brake. This is a '99 with 10k on it. Do I need to start wearing a helmet?

You mean you aren't wearing one already? I myself wear one of those viking helmets like Conan did. You know the one with the two horns? No, never happened to me.

I'm too lazy to look in the manual, but I recall reading that ABS only works above a certain speed.

Well now! Maybe we've stumbled upon a new theory for roof cracks! Ok, how many of you with roof cracks are wearing Conan style Viking.......... Oh, never mind. No, really, I the one that was complaining about wise cracks!

Raoul,

According to the Ford manual all ABS diagnostics road tests are supposed to be done at 10 mph or greater. It does not specifically say that ABS does not function at less than that but it is implied from the diagnostics info. Maybe thats it.

with my 97 I had 4 wheel abs and it did lock up at 50 for a split second, on a number of occasions. The dealer said it was the brake pad material. Someone at work who had a thunderbird told me he had the same problem. They de-glazed the brake pads (whatever that means) and 3 months later, it happened again.

it would happen if you lightly touched the brakes, like say when you are driving and up ahead you notice something so you move your foot off the accelerator and lightly put it on the brake just in case you need to stop fast. I mean, touching that lightly!
