Angry ABS Light on

Since last week my ABS light has been staying on. I checked the fuses and they were ok. The front wheel sensors were connected and intact. I didn't see any sensors on the rear wheels. I made sure the connections were all clean and tight as well. Nothing helped. What's the best way to troubleshoot the ABS light? My brake pads are looking a little thin and will need replacement soon. Would this cause the ABS light to stay on? I know German cars have a brake light that comes on when the pads get thin. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have rear ABS, there is a sensor mount on the rear axle.

I found it. I cleaned it up but the light is still on. What should I try now?

Have you checked your fault code yet? Check out the following thread to see how if you haven't.

I retrieved the diagnostic code by removing the passenger side kick panel (right in front of the door sill on the passenger side) and locating the plug connector with a red/black wire connected to a orange/black wire. When you unplug it, you use the orange/black wire to retrieve the code. Simply turn the ignition on and ground the orange/black wire for at least a second (don't ground the red/black wire - it'll blow the fuse). Your ABS light on the dash will then blink the code.
I tried this and the ABS light just stayed on.

Any suggestions?

Make sure you get a good ground. It's sometimes difficult with all the painted/treated parts.

I'll try again, but I grounded the connector to a clean metal surface which happened to be where 2 wires ground to the body right there under the kick panel. I even checked the jumper wire I was using to ground with an ohm meter.

Hmmmm, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe different years have different procedures to use to retrieve the diagnostic code? Mine's a '97 and I just kept grounding mine to various likely spots 'till I got the "blink code".
I also took it to a local brake shop, "Just Brakes", and they double-checked the code for me - for free. If you can't figure it out, maybe you could do the same. Just tell them you want an estimate of how much it would cost for them to fix whatever's wrong with your ABS system. Most places will give you an estimate free of charge. You might find out it's something you can fix yourself. Worked for me . . .
