285/75R16 tire has a sectional width of just over 11", recommended rim widths are 7.5" - 9" not really a proper fit for your 16x7 rims.

screw,

how do you figure out the recommended rim width and the sectional width of a wheel/tire?

Michelins's web page will give you tire specs including recommended wheel width. If you go to www.michelin.com you can follow the links for each tire model. The spec sheets are in adobe acrobat. Here is a sample for the popular LTX/MS. http://tires.michelin-us.com/assets/pdfs/doc_ltxms.pdf

I ran 285/75-16 BFG ATs on my stock 16x7 rims for a couple of months when I first bought my Screw. I have them mounted on 16x10 Eagle 589s now. They looked good on the stock rims (not as good as on the 589s though) and fit without any rubbing. I know several people who are running 285s on stock 16x7s without any problem. In fact I know several Z-71 owners who are have run 285s on their stock 16x6.5 inch rims for years without any problems. While it is always best to follow the tire manufacture's recommendations, I don't think one inch is going to make that big a difference. If it was that big a deal there would be warning lables everywhere not to do it instead of a "recommendation".

wolf creek,

Don't sweat the 285's on the stock rims. They'll look great and be just fine.

I have friends that have run these for several years with no problems, as have many people on here. Good luck, your truck will look great. Rich
