Speedo Calibration

I recently put 285/75R16 on my '00 150 4X4 and had searched high and low on this board and was able to come to no conclusion whether my speedo could be recalibrated. As it turns out, it was in for warranty and I asked the mechanic outright. Turns out there is not a problem. There are 8 to 10 programs in the computer which are able to be implemented which will corect for a larger tire size. I hope this helps some of you out who are as baffled as I was afer reading posts that said yes or no. If you want any info or pictures just drop me a line. As a sidebar, I have roughly 2" of clearence in the front and no rubbing what so ever on stock wheels, and damn it looks good.

Yes it can be re-calibrated. My son just went to 32" tires and was 8 mph off at 55 mph. We took it to a speedometer speciality shop in Houston Texas called United Speedometer and had it recalibrated for $75. It took about an hour.

akforsyth,

Are you sure that the dealer can simply reset a setting on the computer? That is not what I have been told by by dealer. I will call them again tomorrow and ask why I was not told about the computer setting.

I have 295/45 - 18's, and my dealer claimed they tried to calibrate, but couldn't. They claimed that if they couldn't do it using the computer, it couldn't be done.

I'm just living with it (it's reading fast, so that'll save on tickets!!), but if my dealer was just blowing smoke, I'd like to get it calibrated.

roushscrew, Be careful, If you went to a bigger tire, you will be reading too slow. If your speedometer is reading 55, you are probably doing between 60 and 65 or more.

Well, the recalibration is now done, and I have tested it against my wifes car. Not a problem. It took them about 20 minutes to do and only costed $30 Canadian! The dealership I take it to is generally known for being a bunch af a$$hole$, but in this instance they came through for me...but at the same time I was fighting for being overcharged on a tranny screen/filter change (quoted 160, charged 195..I don't think so!) Anyway, tell the idiots at your local ford dealership that it can be done, but remember that there are only certain sizes that they can change to, and I was told 285 was one of the last sizes that could be done (they can generally go +/- 10%) Hope this helps some guys. BTW, Ford of Canada is the one that told me it could be done!

97-98 trucks need the VSS gear changed in the tailshaft of the tranny.

99-up can be recalibrated with the computer.
