ABS light on?

My ABS light is now on. I have a 2000 F150 2wd 5.4L. It used to go on if i was doing dougnuts in the snow or slipping alot about a year back, but then it would go off. I just installed a 3.5" Fabtech spindle lift and left the sensors off the spindle for now. But the light was on well before I did the suspension work. Im thinking of leaving them off, but that light pisses me off on the dash. Anyone know if there is a reset somewhere. Or do I have to take it in to Ford.

abs light

Ford mechanic told me that whenever the abs light goes on, 9 out of 9 times its the sensor. Mine is located right on top of the rear pumpkin..just my two cents.

That's right........had to replace mine (the speed sensor) and it took care of the problem. About $40 for the sensor and 30 minutes under the truck as opposed to $195 at the dealership. It should be on top of the rear differential.

Unhappy Sensor vs Module

After reading many of the comments in this thread I am wondering if I am getting the straight goods from my dealer. My ABS light came on (1999 F150, 4.6L, 35K Miles) and they tell me the ABS module needs to be replaced. It is about $500 installed. Has anyone had experience in this area? Could they be mistakena and perhaps it is just the sensor in the diff.? Any suggestions welcome. If they are correct are there any after market replacements for things like the ABS Module?

Cheers

Johnnyrocket,

About $40 I hear for the sensor itself (I had the dealer do mine since it was already there. It was $140, ouch, I know) You might replace it first and see if that does it. If not, humbly go back to the dealer, maybe they aren't trying to $crew you after all.

I have a 97 F150 2WD. My ABS light ahs stayed on after start-up twice now. Both times if I re-start it goes away.

The sensor, is there only one, or is the one on the differential for the back brakes only.

Yes on the rear there is only one sensor and it sits right on top of the differential. Very simple and easy to get to. You could also have front ABS which means there would be one sensor per wheel upfront also. Easiest way to check is to see if there are any wires going into the front hubs. If so then you have a 3 channel ABS system otherwise it's just the 1 rear channel.

thanks about sensor

well glad I looked here before I wen't down to the dealer
just like yall said mine just turned 46k

but , a question mine is 3 phase .( is that the right term ?) should I go ahead and replace all three maybeye save in the long run or just do the rear sensor and kind of do a proccess of elimination ?

does one sensor go out more common than the others?

thanks guys

guess I found my project for my next day off

I think the correct term your looking for is 3 channel ABS. Meaning both back wheels are on 1 sensor and the front are seperate. No I would only replace the one that is bad. I think the most common one to go out is the back one that sits on top of the rear diff. Do not know why.
