Lug nut problem

Hey Guys - need some help.

I bought the 18" 2000 SVT Lightning rims/wheels from a buddy for my 1999 F-150 XLT and now I'm having trouble finding some lug nuts at a reasonable price. I say "reasonable" because the dealer will charge me $7 per lug nut! Apparently, the 2000 models changed from 12mm studs to 14mm. Can I do this and where are some places on the net where I can buy either regular lug nuts or locking ones or does trak auto or pep boys sell them?

I did contact www.afswheels.com and they couldn't help. The guy said I needed lug nuts with a washer attached. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Why are you changing your lugs? The 2000 wheels will fit on your '99. Also, I think you have to change out the rotors to fit the 14mm lugs. The wheels and your rotors are hub centric so the only thing your lugs/nuts are doing is holding the wheel againt the rotor. Torqued right, you should have any problems.

Currently I have the standard open end lug nuts (not seen due to the hub cover) and they would terrible with the SVT rims since they would be exposed. I'm looking for the closed end chrome type.

I haven't read anything about changing out the rotors. Last night I went to a SVT Ford dealer and they mentioned nothing about that. All they said I needed was the lug nuts, which are $7.15 each through them. I'm looking in some other directions, so if anybody has any info that would help I would appreciate it.

I just did the same thing with my Expy. '02L wheels with the stock nuts. It doesnt look bad cause the nuts and studs are painted black. Cant really notice them unless you look real close. I would like to know why we can't use a conical nut since our trucks have 12mm studs and the wheels have 14mm holes. If you look really close at the wheels you will see that the seats are already tapered for a conical nut. Anyone know why?

Ooops! My mistake. I misread your post thinking you needed lugs rather than the nuts.
As Gilda Radner said "well, never mind."

Well after talking with some "Speed" experts at a few local shops, I decided to purchase the lug nuts from the dealer. They are the special Lightning ones to fit 12mm for $7.15 per. The local Speed shop said the regular cone lug nuts would fit, but safety would be compromised. They could have sold me the cone ones and made a profit, but instead recommended forking over the $140 and buying the OEM ones from the dealer.

At the Ford dealer the parts lady first checked with their Steeda catalog to see if they might sell similar lug nuts at a lower cost, but they didn't have any. Right before she placed the order she looked at me and said "So you are going to spend 140 bucks on lug nuts? OK". Tough call - I hated to pay the extra $100 - but I'll have no worries on the road with a tire coming off or real bad vibrations. Fortunately my wife didn't go through the roof when I told her. She'll just be glad when these tires are out of the living room and on the truck!
