Help, I want to go up in tire size...but
For a while I have been contemplating going up in tire size from the stock 245/75R16 on 16x7 rims to 265/75R16 or 285/75R16 on the stock rims (call me warped, but I kinda like them). These will be going on a 2000 with a 4.6 and 3.55 Limited slip axle. Now my questions are:
1. What will be the impact on these larger tires on my acceleration/power?
2. How difficult is it to get the speedo reprogrammed?
3. Will the 285's clear without any mods, or will I be trimming the plastic/bottoming out inside the fenders?
4. It does not really matter, but what about fuel economy?
5. Will my stock rim fit 265's/285's (many tire manufaturers say lower limit is 7.5" wheel)?
6. Would a new chip lessen the woes created by the mods?
Thanks.

Your truck is a 4x4 right? Anyways, my old 99' and my new 00', both had 3.55 gears. My 99' was a 4.6, the 00' is a 5.4, both trucks also 265's on them. It might throw your speedo off a little, but accleration should be real close. Again, don't quote me, because I'm not sure just how far off you would be.
I have 305's
I use the stock rim on my 1998 4x4 and they look good. They bow out a little bit but overall the accleration is the same. My speedo was an easy gear correction- 4 dollar part. The only thing I will suggest is if you go with the 285 or bigger then make sure your next purchase is a chip because your shift points will be all out of wack and your truck will upshift on the slighest incline on the highway in OD. Good luck!
