towing with larger rims

I just wanted to know how my towing capacity would be affected if I went with 22" rims and 305/45 tires. I have a 1998 Expedition 4wd with 3.73 gears and 5.4L engine. How much weight would I still be able to tow safely? Thanks for the help.

You'd be limited to the weight limits on the new 22" tires. I can't imagine that these would have an actual "LT" type of load rating like a "C" or "D". They will probably be "P" rated, which is a standard Passenger car rating and would limit you to around 2200 lbs per tire (this is totally just a guess on my part!!)

The next part of the equation is how much taller these 22" are compared to stock. If they are still around 31" tall, you should be fine on the gears. If they are taller, then your gear ratio will "change" too. maybe something like 3.55 or something.......

Probably won't hurt you too bad on towing. It'll change your speedo and odometer readings however.

It seems that Ford subtracted 500 lbs from the max towing rating on the F150's if you were running the 17" wheels compared to the 16" wheels...... So, maybe you will need to subtract 750 lbs or so.............

Angry Towing with my 23"

I have a 99 f-150 with 23" wheels. The towing does get affected a little I tow 26 ft Mako with twin engines all pkg weight is about 4800 lb-5000. it really sucks in towing. I had to upgrade my gears to 4:10 nowit tows awsome & the truck runs better. If you notice at 65 mph your rpms are over 2000 thats not normal now t 65 i'm way under 2000 rpms.. Change your gears.. They go for around $450.00.

4.2 Power,

Do you have any pictures of your truck? Is so, could you post some or email them to robertc128@hotmail.com

Also, how is the ride with the 23"s? Is it very stiff? Also, where do you get new gears? Thanks for the help.

Robert
