Tires and MPGs - 2010 5.4 XLT Supercrew

TL/DR - I would like to get some real-world information on the MPGs you guys have with leveling kits and your A/T tires.

--------------------------------------------------------

I understand that I may be in the wrong department if I want good MPGs while going with an all-terrain tire, but I was curious what kind of MPGs you guys got with your past/current setups.

My idea was to get a 2'' Zone Leveling Kit after seeing some of the other setups people(DewserB and Desert Dawg) have but I will also do more research too and may even go with a slightly smaller level if I go with smaller tires. Sorry for being a poser =P. I have always liked the look Nitto Terra Grapplers have as I do not need anything crazy considering the type of weather I have out here in San Diego, in terms of overall performance in different scenarios. I do take trips up to Big Bear during the winter months for snowboarding but even that snow is not that bad compared to most places in the U.S..

I also want to finally pick up an exhaust/intake system and I know that will help quite a bit with MPGs as well, so it could potentially offset some of the loss from moving to bigger tires.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. If there is another thread that has any of this information already discussed, please feel free to link it.

Thanks in advance.

Howdy!

Terra grapplers will maintain relatively good MPG's, as will most A/T tires. Leveling kits are a great way to allow for bigger tires. The newer model 09-13's usually come stock with 275/65/18 or 265/55/20 tires, and even without the leveling kit you could go a decent amount bigger. Terra Grapplers are great A/T's and if those are your favorite tires go for them.

That being said, the loss in mpg's from an A/T usually will be a result of increased weight, specifically if you're putting on a larger size. Depending on how much bigger you go, you might lose 1-3 mpgs, it varies. A 5.4L V8 with 275//65/18 terra grapplers, I would expect to get around 14.5-16.0 mpg's. Any bigger than that and I would guess 12.5-15.0 mpg's.

Now, a new exhaust system won't necessarily increase mpg's. Some may see improvements with new exhausts, but it generally will not have much of an affect on mpg's. You could definitely put a new one with a more aggressive tone that the stock setup. I would suggest the Borla XR-1 if price isn't a concern.

Most important thing is to figure out the size of the tire you want. The size of the tires you want will determine if you will need a leveling kit or not. Even if you don't need the level, you can still get one if you want the look/performance of a leveling kit. Next, you can research the exact tire you would like, as I said, a lot of happy people with terra grapplers on this site. Lastly, you can definitely get a new exhaust system, but don't expect much of a benefit to your mpg's. Definitely possible to help airflow and such, but usually when guys get new exhausts they slam on the gas to hear their new pipes roar, negating any benefit to mpg's. Best way to improve mpg's is simply adjusting the way you drive. BTW your highway:city driving ratio will also be a big determinant in what kind of mpg's you will achieve.

I went with the AS 2" and it was dead level, I wanted alittle rake so I added a 3" block and I went up to a 275/70/18 tire about a 1" taller then stock and lost at least 2mpg

Pretty much exactly what I was hoping to be told. Thanks for all of the info and appreciate you taking the time to go into detail.
