Powder Coating FX4 Wheels

I have the 18" FX4 wheels and I originally was going to buy the 20" appearance package FX4 wheels in black, but decided it is not cost effective. I really am not a fan of aftermarket black wheels because I personally think they all look the same and are rarely actually all black. So, I am going to have my 18" wheels powder coated black instead as I think they'll look pretty good. Anyone else done this to their 18" FX4 wheels? Got a place in Dallas will do all 4 for $200.

What's yalls thoughts? Going to get this done and then next up is buying some new tires...deciding between duratracs, trail grapplers, and terras

Also let me know if you think I should get flat black or glossy? I'm thinking flat

What color is your truck? I'm not sure about the price, but powdercoating seems to be pretty popular on here. The 18" FX4 wheels look good black. One thing you could do if you're unsure is go spend a few dollars on a few cans of plastidip. Another member on here did it. You could do your wheels and see how you like it. And it peels right off when you're ready. Just a thought if you're not sure about how it will look.

For tires, I'm a fan of both Nitto's. I've had both and currently using the Trails. The duractracs seem to get strong reviews by members on here as well.

thats a good price - I was quoted over $100 a piece when I looked at getting some OEM 17s coated.

Post a pic of your truck... would give us more to go on whether you should go gloss or flat.
Gloss might be easier to keep clean

I think the quality of the OEM wheels is superior to all but the most expensive aftermarket wheels myself. I'd go ahead and powder-coat them, $200 for all 4 is a pretty good deal. As others said post a pic of your truck as it is now.

The trucks black. Im gonna skip plastidipping because I know I want them to be black. I've heard that powder coating can damage the strength of the wheels, but I dunno if there's any credibility to this claim? I'd do the trails before the terras, but I take some long trips and am worried bout road noise with those. You ever taken trips with the trails, also ever been in any snow with em?

You can use the attach photo or imbed the IMG from an online hosting service like Photobucket , mines a 2010 FX4 with 18s. I take that back, I forgot attachments are disabled.

Sounds good to me. Yeah since you know you want them black, I'd just go with the powdercoating. I haven't heard anything about it weakening the wheels. I feel like I've heard nothing but praises on here. As for the tires, I've had both the Terras and the Trails. I'm not going to lie to you, the Trails are noticeably louder than the Terras. Have you ever had a mud-terrain? At first I was worried, but its actually just a hum, nothing obnoxious. I've taken road trips on them and no problems at all. Never get tired of them. And the test is really that my wife hasn't ever said a word about them and she is usually the first to comment if something sounds funny or obnoxious. So I feel its an acceptable level for sure. I've had two sets. One on my old truck where I went from the terras to the trails, and this set where I went from the stock tires to them. So there's that initial break in where you have to get used to the sound difference, but I think you'll love them. And to give you more reference, just putting my stereo at a very moderate level (acceptable for my 2 year old), it drowns them out unless you are trying to hear them.

The easiest way for me is to load them into your albums here on the site and open a second tab on your browser, one accessing your album, the other accessing whichever thread you want to post pics in. Then click on the little icon above the text box with the mountains on it. Copy the URL code from the picture in your album (it will be under the picture) and then paste it into the box that popped up when you clicked on that icon. You'll be all set. If your pics are real big, its helpful if you can size them down to 800x600 pixels. Loads faster with less problems. Hope that helped.

Alright awesome, I'll definitely be powder coating them. I wanna get the same black color as the 20" appearance package FX4 wheels. I believe its a flat black? Another thing...I don't know too much about powder coating and I don't want to show up and have the dealer gut me into paying for extra coats of paint and such that I won't need, so any idea if I should get single or double coat?

I've never had mud terrains before, but I've always heard good things bout the trails. I really like the duratracs as well, but I still have a month or so to make a decision on tires.

And finally, I'll try uploading some pics to an album then post em in this thread. I've honestly never seen a 2010-2012 FX4 with black 18" OEM wheels so I am excited to get this done.

Thanks for the advice ya'll

I was in Riverside near Brookfield Zoo but I moved to Indiana over the summer. I'm still 45 minutes from Chicago but now pay 10% of the taxes I was.

I have been thinking about plasti dipping my front bumper, now that I saw this thread I may do the wheels to protect them for the winter and powder coat them next year

Yeah Illinois is not a money friendly place to be, as I have heard.

That sounds like a good plan, plasti dip is a great temporary fix.

Im going to use the plasti dip mainly to protect the wheels from road salt over the winter so I figure I may as well do them black and see how I like the wheels in black. If I get them powder coated next year I will have to plasti dip them with clear next winter

What salt? Hasn't Illinois had a shortage of road salt the past few years?

But that is a good idea.

edit: of course I forgot you moved to Indiana!!
