stock rims with bigger rubber
If I have stock 16's, can I put on rubber that is much bigger? The reason that I ask is that when I look at my truck, the tires always look too small for the rims. I'm want a slight lift, without having to go through a body lift or spindles etc. etc. If it is possible to put on larger rubber, does it raise the truck at all? Or, is it cheaper to change the rims and rubber at the same time (which I doubt)?
Larger Tires on 16" Wheels
You can definately put larger tires on your truck, although depending on how much larger tires you're talking about, you will notice a loss of low-end torque (and at some point even a loss in fuel milage.) You probably have around a P265/65-R16 on there stock. If you want a taller tire as you mentioned go to a P265/70-R16 or even a P265/75-R16 (the 70 will be five percent taller than a P265/65, and the 75 will be ten percent taller.) If you want a wider tire go to a P275 or P285 (the number represents the number of millimeters wide the tire is.)
Thanks man, I knew the question was going to be a simple one to answer, but since I have no experience with tires I had to ask. The other reason for the question is that my tires are starting to look a little bald, and it looks as though I'll be having to buy new ones before the winter (or spring at the latest.) I would imagine that with each size up would be a jump in price also eh?
You better believe it. The bigger the tire the bigger the check you gotta write. I got some cheaper tires and they ran me about $140 a tire for the larger size. You can find 35" tires for $180 a tire very easily. On a 2wd truck I know you can fit 265/75/16s with no problems but I've heard from some people that you can squeeze a 285/75/16 tire on them. A 265/75 is about a 31/10.50 (in inches) and the 285s are about a 33/11.50 (again in inches). I have 285s on my truck with the stock rims and no problems but I have a 4x4.
Here's what 265/75 x 16's look like on a 4x4 Screw. Like you, I did not like the look of the smaller wheels on a large truck. I have not noticed any difference in performance, but I have the 5.4...so I did not suspect that I would feel a difference. The new tires do ride better then the factory ones.

Yes you can.
I got rid of my dinky tires at 8K and put on 305/70 R16's
That was 80K ago.....
That was the biggest tire I could put on my 4X4. If you have a 4X2 you will have to go to a smaller tire, unless you jack it up...
By going to a larger tire, doing the math, my speedo is 5.4mph off on the slow side.....so 65mph (indicated) is 60mph....about...

Here is a pic
If I could figure out how to put one in the body of the message I would not have to attach it....

cool, thanks for all the help. The pix look sweet btw. I love the look of the larger tire on the 16 inch rims.
Has anyone a picture of a 4X2 with larger tires, and stock 16 rims? I think on my truck, being a short box reg cab, even if it isn't 4X4 it's gonna look way better with larger tires.
