I'm looking for a 20" A/T tire that comes in around 34.5 dia and 12.50 wide.

Nitto has a 295/60/20 Terra Grappler that fits the bill but I don't want or need an E rated tire. It's heavy. Most of the larger sizes appear to be E rated. Any options of a good taller All Terrain that is D rated?

 

Boy, that's gonna be tough! Like you said, most of the larger tires are E rated.

Sometimes you have to weigh the pluses and minuses to see what's most important to you, but in the world of mods, there's almost always a compromise to make.

I don't think you will find any tire in that size that won't be 'E' rated. You will need a beefy sidewall strength to support that size which will automatically put it into the 'E' class at least....the best of my knowledge anyway. That's providing you are looking for a road tire.

 

I have no personal experience with an E rated tire, but I have read they are a stiffer/rougher ride and very noticeable. I spend a lot of time on the highway these days and I would like to keep the ride the same as these stock Pierelli's.

 

^That being the case...you probably want to stay away from the larger 'E' rated tires.as they require higher pressures and are stiffer on the ride.

 

I think you're right. I may have to be satisfied with something like a 305/55/20 (about 33.2 tall) I believe there is a Terra Grappler in a D for that size.

 

Another thing to consider, all tires (E rated or not) are not created equal.

Recently, I put a set of Goodyear Duratracs on my truck in 275/70/18. That size only comes in E rated, BTW. In my opinion, they rode like crap. So, I took them back to Discount Tire, and they swapped them for a set of Cooper ST Maxx in the same size.

Now consider this. The Duratrac has a 2 ply sidewall (supposedly better riding). The ST Maxx has a 3 ply sidewall (supposedly rougher). The ST Maxx rides WAY better than the Duratrac. Night and day difference. In fact, the ride is now very close to the factory ride.
