20's vs 18's

20's vs 18's

Going to be buying a truck a few months down the road hopefully. I really like the look of the 20 inch rims, but have heard they hurt gas mileage, the truck doesn't take off quite as fast because of weight and they don't ride quite as nice. I heard the only thing they are good for is looks. I know they are more expensive. Just wondered if the downfalls are overblown, or does it make that much of a difference? Thanks!

I'm sitting on 20's. They are nice but tire replacement suck a**. I am averaging 24mpg with 35's, lift kit and 4x4. Take off power is fine at redlights or pulling my boat. The ride is just fine. So don't think the wheel size affects fuel mileage, ride or power. I don't think 2" in wheel size will be noticeable. Just my thoughts.

i went to a 20 from a 17 on my 04 and noticed no difference i can remember. on my 08 i went to a 23 from an 18 and it made a difference, brakes and a tune are on much higher on the to do list, like NEXT. 20" tires can be very reasonable depending on size. if you looking for a bigger mud tire they will be expensive. but a less aggressive tire can be had cheaper. what look are you after?

Thanks guys! I won't be doing any offroading or anything. Just like the looks of the 20's. I really like the black rims on the fx4.

Mine are black and they are pretty sweet. I'd still like to go to a 17 or 18 wheel.

Where do you find reasonable 20" tires? Cheapest I have found (tire rack/treaddepot) has been $330+. I haven't checked with the co-op yet but plan to ASAP.

There are so many different sizes available. 275 50 20, 275 55 20, 275 60 20, 285 50 20, 285 55 20, 285 60 20, etc etc.. some are really expensive and some aren't. You can get the falken rocky mountain at, I think that's what they are called, in a 275 55 20 for less than 900 to your door. I have had several sets of falkens and had great luck with them. Now if you want a 35" 20 it'll cost a fortune. But if you just want a bigger wheel look and a stockish size tire there are lots of options. If you look around for deals they are out there. I just put on brand new chrome 23s with tires, new sensors and lug nuts for less than 1700 on my truck. They're out there, you just need to look a lot and be ready when you find the deal.

I wouldnt get 20s unless your getting a good size tire. 18s look awesome on trucks in my opinion and tires are a lot cheaper. But if you like the novelty and can afford it go for it. I do believe 20s are gonna be heavier so may hurt the mpg but may not be enough to notice as far as mpgs Ive got 17s with 33 inch tires and looks and rides great. The overall size of tires and the way that your truck is geared will determine your mpgs the most but your in a truck so you're not going to get awesome mpgs any way. If you order wheels and tires together you can get a nice set for 1800-2400 bucks and thats for really nice ones. I would also get a lift if you don't already have one if you're getting 20s. It looks best that way unless you're going for the slammed look. Biggest question of all-what are you going to use the truck for?

If you can afford to install a lift and up grade to 20inch rims. Why are you now concerned with tire price? I believe 4x4s look better with a rim size that can support 35 or 37s.

Does anyone know of a tire brand that makes 39s in a 17inch??

Nitto and Toyo both make 40s for 17" rims. Super Swamper Iroks come in 39.5 and 42. I don't know of exactly a 39 though

I wouldn't get 20s unless money is not an issue at all. 18s look fine. I don't hold rims in high regard personally, all they do is hold my tires. I can get 37x13.50s for my 17s and that's as big of a tire as I will ever go. I have 35x12.50s now

It's the tire diameter and width that determines the reduction in gas mileage and performance more then the rim diameter. Mud terrain tires Like Toyo's or Nitto's are real heavy no matter what the wheel diameter as opposed to stock P rated tires. My mileage dropped about 1 1/2 miles per gallon by just going to a heavier 33 inch LT rated tire compared to the stock 32 inch Pirelli's.

I went from OEM 18's to aftermarket 20's with BFG KO-35's, not much difference in performance, you notice some on hills and in the wind but the ride sucks. They are very harsh, tried all different air pressures and even put on new shocks, still terrible. Bought a set of 17's with BGF KM2's, even with the aggressive mud tread they ride a ton better. If I had to do it all over again I would have stayed with the 18's.

Are you telling me that the Pro Comp Metal Mulisha rims are just a rim?? Rims show off the tire that are mounted.

Don't let anyone tell you 20's are more expensive that 18s. The truth is that there is a greater selection of 20" truck tires than there are 18" tires. I have 18" on my Lariat. They ride wonderfully. I understand your towing capacity goes down with a larger wheel. Regardless, if you don't really tow, go with the 20s. The same set of Michelin tires I run today in 18" are actually more expensive at Discount tire for a the same set of 20s! 20s are much more common now and as they are the choice of consumers there is more demand for them.
