Angry Just a Great Human Error...

so i took and repainted my brake calipers the other day, and had put them back on the pickup, i was going to re-torque the bolts at the end of this week.... yea not anymore... slowing down slowly from 65 everything was fine until i heard a pop and my front right tire locks up! I was doing about 20 when this happened. so i got out after i got it under control and look to find metal shavings everywhere i was thinking, "great, i threw a pad." so i get it to the side of the road and i see my caliper is touching the back of the tire, so i was thinking i busted studs on the wheel. "found out i was In a hole so that didn't work" crawled under and lone behold there is about and inch wide and 1/8 inch deep gouge in my rim... That's where the metal filings came from... look around more and i find i lost a bolt on my caliper and it had flopped around and gouged it until it caught. Thankfully a friend of my family was going to work and saw me cussing, and whatnot she drove me to her house got some wire and i got it cobhoused back together well enough i got it home.
Moral of the story if you remove the calipers check the bolts daily, if not every other day!

I gotta disagree that brake caliper bolts are something that needs to be checked and rechecked. I've been driving my fair share of time and I've never rechecked brake caliper bolts nor had them back out or fail. There's no load on a brake caliper bolt; no side loading or twisting motion of any type. The sleeve takes all the load from the caliper. The bolt simply holds it in place. Extremely sorry for your misfortune though.

Never had an issue with brakes on any vehicle i've done until now. I coulda swore i had em tight, heck i drove to school and back for a week on top if ripping around in the fields hauling grass seed and checking for spots for food plots! i guess i need to tap the wrench with a hammer next time! but yes, good ol fencing wire has pulled through a few times for me and dad!

Been there, done that LOL. I hand tightened one bolt and forgot to torque. Took a month but out she came. One the bright side, that's when I got my Monsters because it cracked my stock rim. I even keep an extra brake caliper bolt at home now just in case.
