How dangerously thin is this? (rear brake pads)

I took my truck to the ford dealership today to get an oil change (it was on special and they washed my truck (: ) and they told me that my rear brakes were worn between 4-6MM (disc) or 1-2MM(drum). They wanted to charge me $180 JUST to replace my rear brake pads!! I have not heard any noise from them since the day I got my truck btw. I drive easy on the brake pedal, about how many miles or days do you think I could go before I get my rears done? I planned on getting wagner TQ semi-metallic. Im on a tight college budget and I wanted to wait a week to get them done, do you think its safe? I dont want to damage my rotors.

Also, the cheapest I could find the wagner TQ semimetallic rear brakes for was $51. anyone know of any deals going on?

4mm is a recommended replacement spec on pads. 2mm is recommended on shoes, you still have some life left on them.

I just replaced my rear rotors, pads, and one caliper at just 40k. 2004 FX4. They were shot. Fronts will get me to spring. I was surprised as well!

rears should be disc brakes as well. not drums.

you need to pull a wheel off and look at them yourself. General rule of thumb is when the pad is much thinner then the backing plate of the pad, you need to think about replacing them.

dealerships can sometimes exaggerate the condition to get you to say yes to replacing them.

I talked to my friend today and he said that the last 100 sets of wagner tq pads he has installed have been very noisy. he recommended orielly brake best select pads. anybody have experience with these?

I'm sorry, but I have a difficult time believing your friend. I have installed 3 sets of TQs on my personal vehicles and never a sound out of them. That is all I will put on my vehicles. The only way a TQ could make a noise is if the rotor was not cleaned and it had sand embedded in it.

There is no telling how many on this site have installed them without a problem.

I put the centric ceramics on mine, about $40 at Rockauto. Quiet and work well, not sure about how long they will last...

I'd plan on more than just brake pads - If the pads are worn down that far chances are the rotors themselves are worn as well. If you go by the specs, you might need to replace the rotors as well
