Old Fart Tire Recommendations Please
Old Fart Tire Recommendations Please
I’m looking for recommendations for good, comfortable tires for my 2005 F150, 2WD, 4.2L, daily driver.
Running 255/65/17s.
I just had new Monroe Reflex shocks installed and I’ll need new tires in a couple of months.
I won’t be pulling anything nor doing any off-road driving (if I can help it).
Just looking for a reasonably priced tire that offers a smooth ride.

I assume your just looking for a normal tire and not an a/t or m/t. I have 275/60/20 Goodyear Wrangler SR/As on my truck right now and they are VERY comfortably. When I am on a smooth road or the highway, it feels like you are floating on air.
They are a little on the more expensive side, but I've always had good results with the Michelin LTX M/S. They are being replaced with the LTX M/S2 which seem to be doing just fine as well. 70k mile warranty too! http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...ireSearch=true

Goodyear Wrangler SR-A's are a great all-around truck tire.
Another great choice would be the Dunlop Rover AT(if you can find them, they're discontinued) or the Dunlop Rover HT. Both of those have a 60K tread life warranty.
I've got Rover AT's on my 2006 2WD 4.2L and I absolutely love them. I run 265/70R17's on my truck. Run mostly highway, and they are quiet and ride super smooth. They are also great in the snow. Sandbags in the back for winter, and they've never left me stranded, and I live in an area where we are the absolute last to get plowed, and sometimes don't get plowed. Never had an issue getting around in the winter with them.

hello all,
I have been digging around the site and found this string of posts, close to what I am trying to decide. I have a 2005 XLT 5.4 liter Super cab, 2wd
6 lug factory rims . That said my decision is down to OEM size replacement
( 255 / 65R17 ) or 265 / 70 R 17 next size up. They weigh in about 12 lbs a tire heavier. I get what I consider lousy fuel econ, say 13.2/gal average city and maybe 16 with an egg between my foot and pedal on highway. I am aware I should match spare to size, or do the front to rear switch if a rear goes flat. (also speedo recalibrate) if I care, (I do)
Can anyone provide an actual (or guess) on fuel usage with the larger/ size weight ? 1 less mpg would be fine, but 3 to 5 mpg less isn't worth the cool look . Otherwise I don't think I can go wrong with this tire. Perhaps anyone who has this swap could elaborate any positives/negatives ? at 1000 $ and 70k possible miles, I would hate to find I cannot live with this mild of a change. thanks btw, this has been the best truck I have ever owned, I have yet to deal with plug issues
etc.

Mac,
I 2nd the BFG recommendation--I had a '04 Heritage that I ran for 50K+ with the BFG Long Trails and they had almost no visible tread wear! Great tires, that's what I'm running on my '08 STX now.

I have about 75k on my BFG Long Trails and they still have better than legal tread left. I bought them at Sam's Club. They ride and handle decently for a stock truck that's not driven hard or off road.
sounds u got nice stuff.
