This is exactly why I am considering it. I have no need for a full-out off-road tire like the MTR. I'm looking at the DT because the majority of my driving will be on-road, but if/when I do go off-road (and/or in Colorado snow), I'm thinking the extra grip of the DT's might be beneficial.

I don't want the extra road noise, nor the decreased tread-life that comes with the chunkier tread of a MT tire... and I certainly don't want to pay more to get those things that I don't want.

then just get the duratrac. your better off with it. might as well have it and not need it then need it and not have it. as in the better off road traction.

Shouldn't be any worries of thin side walls. I got into an accident several months ago. Trying to avoid another vehicle turning into me, I turned away into a 10" curb wall along a freeway overpass. Took chunks of rubber out of the sidewall. I only put another 4K miles on that tire before the she got fixed up, they are super stout imo.

I've got the SA's, love em! For what we get in Windsor, across from Detroit, as far as snow, I wished we got more. These tires will take it. Not to say that the DT's won't, but you can also get the SA's in 285/70/17 size which the other ones you can't. See my gallery for pics. They got my vote 100%.

I have the SA's on my work truck and the duratracs on my personal truck. I much perfer the duratracs. I think they look awesome and handle great. Road noise is not an issue in my opinion. Either tire is decent. Dont think you'll be dissapointed either way.

i have the duratracs and absolutely love them. theyve worn great, have pulled through some nasty mud pits, and ride great. i barely notice any noise, and only if im trying to listen for any.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I think I'm going to go with the SA's. After considering all the angles, I think the DT's are really a bit more than I need, and the bonus is the SA's lower price. Chances are decent that they'll last a bit longer, too.

UPDATE:

I put on a set of D-rated SA's last week, size 285/70/17.

These tires ROCK! Snow traction is fantastic. I can even make it up my ice-and-snow-covered driveway in 2WD.
(This pic is just ice from a a couple weeks ago, but there's now about 6" of snow on top of it.)

Noise level is VERY acceptable, and the guy at the shop said his are just about ready to be replaced at 60K, where he's seen DT's coming in at 30K worn out.

I put the duratracs on a week after they came out. Loved them there was no flex to them, great offroad, great in snow and ice, all around a great tire. There is a little highway noise, but if u have the windows up and radio on u wont even notice it. Mine still had alot of tread on them when i sold the truck, they had 37k miles on them would have been good for prolly another 25k. I would def go with the dts

More good info. Looks like a matter of shear personal preference, and consideration of how much off-road they will really see, as both seem to be excellent performers.

I figured with 1.5 years under my belt with the SA's I'd give an update.

The tires are wearing well, are still quiet (for what they are), and I'm VERY glad I went with them. Highly recommended.

That said, I installed a set of Firestone Destination AT's on my wife's '01 Escape, and she is just as happy with those on her vehicle as I am witrh the SA's on mine. Even quieter than the SA's, and GREAT winter traction!
