what is offset and backspacing?

before i say anything i wanna apologize if this has already been posted cause after seein ncsu's sig i always search before i post and i couldnt find anything that answered my question haha. anyways i feel dumb for asking but wth is the offset and backspacing of a wheel? i see everyone talkin about them in other tire and wheel threads and regarding clearance and idk what they're talkin about. i think it has to do with how far the wheel is form the brakes? correct me if im wrong please!

ok i understand the backspacing now but the offset part is confusing, is it saying basically the thickness of the wheel cause thats what it looks like in the diagram

Offset is the distance from the center of the wheel to it's mounting surface (where it bolts to the hub). So two differnt width wheels with the same offset will have a different dish. That's why backspacing is so much easier to understand.

Offset is very simple. Here is a link that will explain it.
