tire pressure question

I'm running bfg at 285/65/18's load range d (max psi 65) on stock fx4 wheels. What is the best psi to run for tread life?

kingfish51 08-01-2010 06:26 PM

I would run them at 45. Do not go lower than 40 if you try other pressures.

wandell 08-01-2010 10:18 PM

Yeah, I'd run 40 to 45 psi for daily driving.

bellman 08-02-2010 09:11 PM

Thanks for the info. I've been running them at 40, I bumped them up to 45 to see how they do. I've noticed my front tires are wearing on the outside edges. I just ordered a leveling kit yesterday so I will need to have it aligned after it's installed anyway.

Get it aligned and rotate the tires.

I agree.

Correct BFG T/A Pressure

Question...I have the stock BFG Rugged Trail T/A 275/65-18 on my '07 King Ranch and the placard on the door says to infalte the tires to 35 psig. The label on the tire sidewall says that maximum inflation pressure is 35 psig.

I saw that bellman said his BFG T/A in the same size says maximum tire pressure is 65 psig.

Am I the only one with low pressure BFG's ?

Thanks

His are a different size and load range, and possibly even a different tire, as he did not say which model. Yours are the OE tires that came from Ford. Other OE brands in the same size, like the Goodyears are a LR C tire and would have a different placard.

Yours are a P series tire (passenger car), a load range B.

Thanks kingfish51. I guess I didn't realize that my OE tires were classified as passenger tires even though my KR has the 7200# GVW and towing packages. That's probably why the truck rides and handles so nicely.

I do want to upgrade to a larger size 18" on the stock rim. Any suggestions? My truck isn't lifted but I will probably put the Bilstein 5100's on it to level it. I was thinking of going to an LT285/65-18 BFG T/A. Heard some good things about it on these forums.

:beers:

The TAs are good tires, I run them for winter tires. The tires you mention are a LR E tire, with a max pressure of 80. A bit of overkill on an F150, but will still work well. You will notice the ride will be a bit harsher, and you will have to run them at about 50 psi rather than 35.

07newscrew 08-05-2010 02:02 PM

I'll take those things into consideration when I go to buy tires. Thanks for the feedback.

The BFG AT TA also comes in a 275/70-18 size.

They give a little more sidewall, and measured 33.2" in diameter. And they are considerably cheaper that the 285/65-18'.

I have the BFG AT/TKO 285's and have been running 40 psi for the last 20k. Getting ready for a small trip this weekend and checked tire pressure. All good. On a whim I upped the pressure to 50psi. Immediately noticed a much firmer ride. I think I'll do 50psi up and 45 on the way back... see what's what.

At 40, you are at half or less of the load carrying ability of the tire. The GAWR of the F150 is about 4k per axle. At 40 psi, a LR E 80 psi tire doesn't even come close to be able to carry that load.

If your vehicle had come with a TPMS setup and those tires, it would have been set to show low pressure at 46psi.

ok
Just got off phone with BFG customer service. They calculated that for regular driving, optimum pressure for those tires on my '05 supercrew to be 41-43 psi.
(Tires ar LT 285 D load range. max pressure 65psi)
