help me choose what size tires

Well I just took my 2001 supercrew into the shop today because my check engine light came on. There were a few things wrong but they noticed that my tires are reaching the end of their life and said that they were a safety hazard. With spring coming up I would like some new tires because it rains almost everyday here in the spring. Currently I have stock tires on stock rims but I wanted to go up to 33 inch tires. My plan was to get new 18 inch rockstar xd wheels and nitto mud grappler 33 inch tires but I need tires sooner so I cant to that. I was wondering what the biggest tires I could get are for my stock 17 inch rim. I know that 33 inches tall and is 12.50 wide going to be too wide (I planned on cranking the torsion bars 2.5 inches). I would like the tires to stick out maby a inch but I know that has to do with what wheels you get. I would like the tire to be as wide as possible. If any body could give me the measurements for the tire I am looking for on my stock rim that would be great. Thanks for all the help.

I'd suggest you go with a 305/65-17 (33x12.50) tire. When you can afford new wheels, I'd go with a 17x10 with 4.5 inches of backspacing. However, just so you know, a lot of companies are discontinuing wheels in our 5x135mm bolt pattern.

wandell, I am also doing new tires soon on my 01 ext. cab. I cant understand the tire size thing, so how far would the 33 12.50 stick out compared to stock(on the stock rims of course on an xlt)? thanks.

Depends on what your OEM size is. Just subtract the width of the OEM tire from the 305mm width and devide by two. For instance 305-265=40mm. So a 305/65-17 will stick out 20mm farther than a 265/70-17.
