Brakes for the Lariat Crew Cab

Hey guys and gals,

I stopped in to see how much it would cost to resurface all 4 rotors and install brake pads on my 06' Lariat 4x4 screw.

The truck has 43K on the clock and I am getting some pedal pulse in normal braking. I figured I would stop in to the local brake shop named "M"( they usually do exhaust) and see what it would cost for a 4 wheel job and flush my 4 year old brake fluid too.

I usually do my own wrenching and have done many a brake job on my cars , trucks and boat trailers so I do have some idea what kind of labor we have here.
I was literally in awe at the price, $840 for 4 wheel brakes and $130 to flush the brake fluid. After taxes and shop fees over a $1000, yep a THOUSAND DOLLARS for brakes and a flush. I felt like I was being flushed.
It has been a longggggg time since I have paid for mechanic work but even then the brake jobs were only in the $3-400 range. What the heck has happened??

P.S. I was not born during the discovery of America OR the birth of christ so no jokes about age.

Just order some thermo quiet pads and rotors from rock auto. Rotors arent worth turning anymore. The lack of dust from the wagners is worth the $$ ten times over!!

Question

I guess I am having sticker shock. I had no idea normal people (non mechanic types) have to shell out that kind of money for maintenance on their automobiles. I mean I would have to sell mine if I had to pay for routine services like this.

My truck is mostly stock. I learned from quite a few "improved" cars, trucks, boats, etc. that resell is painful as you watch that money disappear.

I do tow a tandem trailer at times both a cargo and a boat trailer. I was interested in brake performance based on several suggestions to use ceramics but the research I have so far is pointing me towards semi metallics for true stopping power and deal with the brake dust, constant cleaning of the wheels. I usually wash my truck and car once a week anyway and a gallon of the purple stuff goes a long way and makes cleaning brake deposits fairly easy once you have the brushes and other implements of destruction.

What is the consensus on Semi-Metallic pads?
Secondly, several auto repair places around me will do rotor turning for around $20 each, about $80 for a set. Why would you buy new ones if your originals are in pretty good shape, just need truing and surfacing?

Well most of the time a warped rotor is so bad that when you cut to make it true again it makes it to thin for specs and it could also warp faster and easyer

also if you rotors are good you can just put a cheap set of pads on

most of us guy go top notch on part to last longer

but you can go cheap on pads and rotors and do it all for about 300
