Shuddering

I rotated my tires this afternoon and had shuddering develop. The shuddering could be felt in the steering wheel, but not through the rest of the truck.

My first thought was that I did not evenly torque the lug nuts. I stopped and backed off the lug nuts, raised each side of the truck and re-tightened, paying much closer attention than I had earlier.

That cleared up most of the problem, but later on the shuddering returned. This time the shuddering could be felt not just through the steering wheel, but the truck body as well. This occurs around 62-68 mph, but occurred at 55 as well.

Strangely, the shuddering is intermittent. Most of the time the only vibration I feel is normal, but then the shuddering slowly starts, peaks, and then returns to normal.

My other thought is a bubble forming in a tire, but the shuddering should be continuous at highway speed. That is not the case.

It is more then likely do to the fact that your tires were worn and cupped because you waiting to long to rotate, or have alignments issues and when you rotated them they are now uneven and need time to wear into where they are now located on your truck. Its not a big deal. Now if you see a bubble somewhere thats obviously an issue. Also a wheel weight may have been lost causing this but more then likely its tire wear.

I will wait and see what happens after the tires wear some.

My alignment is perfect. It was just checked a couple weeks ago. It has been quite a while since I rotated the tires.

Sounds like the tires are cupped out.

They are. My rear tires (were up front) are cupped from under inflation. A faulty gauge caused me to run the front tires at 15 psi. The uneven wear caused me to get the alignment checked, where it was discovered that the tires were under inflated.

I immediately replaced the gauge.

The tires that are now up front are just fine. The cupping never caused a problem before now. Will the problem be corrected once the tires wear in? I would like to avoid buying a new set of tires, but winter is here. I need to get some snow tires anyway.
