Worn Brakes @ 35K?

Hello,
I just found this forum and would like to pose a question the group:
I have an 06 F-150 super crew with 35K. I recently took it to my local ford dealer for a surging brake problem. The diagnosis is warped rotors & worn pads, not under warranty.
Is it common for this to happen inside 35K miles?
I am a bit shocked staring a $ 400.00 brake job in the face.
Thanks,
...Dan

It is not common, but it has happened. What are they doing for $400? Is it a 4X4 or 4X2? Do you have mechanical ability for a brakejob?

well... I had a 69 Rally Sport carmero in High School that I turned a few wrenches on but now at age 45 I don't get under the hood much.
My 06 is a 4X4.
The dealer said the would repalce the rotor and pads for $ 400.00
Thanks,
...Dan

I just replaced the front rotors and pads on my 05 FX4 with about 35-36k miles on it when I did it. The rear pads and rotors were fine.

I spent 165 dollars on new rotors and good new pads that work much better than the stockers and did it all myself in about 2 hours. It's really not hard to do and takes very little time when you are careful and take your time in putting it all back together.

Hell the hardest part is just getting the pistons in the calipers pushed back for the new pads to fit around the new rotors. All the rest is a cakewalk.

Oh and to answer your question, mine were worn about 3/4 of the way down. I probably could have gone another 5-10k or so, but I'd rather have new good oens on there.

Ok, the rotors on the 4X4 will run you about $80 each and top quality pads such as Wagner ThermoQuiets or CarQuest Blues will be about $45 for the fronts. So, about $200 for parts. It really is pretty straight forward and there are write-ups on the procedure.

my 2006 fx4 screw went in today. 21k on the odo. rotors were resurfaced last nov. now i need to change all 4. $700 +. i complained that i just got it resurfaced last year. i don't do any hard braking, i drive like miss daisy, and turn off the overdrive when going downhill to allow the engine to do the majority of braking. 8 months later, i need new rotors and pads. we'll see what the service dept says, if they'll discount me or not.

I had this exact same thing happen on my truck early on. I got it all replaced and it has been good to go for the last 60k miles or so.

Ford's stock pads are crap.

I bought my truck with 38K on the clock....front pads were basically gone. I went with aftermarket Powerslot rotors and Hawk pads....much better performance and quality parts.

My mustang rear brakes went out at 42K...and I mean eating into the rotor out, front pads had 40% life left, Ford uses cheaper rear pads on their cars now adays.

make sure to check your calipers as well....both fronts on my 05 were cracked

Be glad you guys have the 4x4 because there rotors are cheaper than the 4x2. I just replaced 1 rotor and the dealer was $308 out the door. They got it back a couple hours later.

DapperDan,
I did brakes on my 04 around 35 or 40K mi. I went with Wagner rotors (got through local auto parts supplier) and Akebono ceramic dustless pads (The TireRack.com) The dustless pads are great...no more dingy brown front wheels, I'm going on 66K now and the pads look like they've hardly worn at all.
Good Luck with it. I'm sure if your son wants to use the truck he won't mind working on it.

^^Well put. I just ordered some new front rotors and pads the other day, $400 seems about right. Good luck with the new brakes.
