ECU??? Brake control?
Just had to bite the bullet and have the TPS changed on my '04 now a day before going in the "brake" and ABS light came on. Thinking it was just another speed sensor I told them to check it. The service guy comes out and tells me I need an ECU or what's called a 'brake control unit' and that $628.28 before install!!!!! What the @%$#*&$## is this? I'm holding off until I can get the cash up because I need the plugs done and that's $485 due to the fact I'm afraid if I do them I'll end up snapping one or two with the fine job of Ford engineering on the 5.4. Do I need the dealer to do this ECU? BLAST this truck is eating my credit card faster than Cabelas!!!
yeah, mine went, it's that black module on top of the pump held on by 4 torx screws, i just went to the wrekers and got one for 100 bucks, works great now, just make sure you tell them it's seprete from the pump or they may want to sell u the whoe pump for like 300 bucks, you dont need the whole thing.
Thanks for the info but dealer told me this is, again, something that needs to be flash programed when replaced so I'm guessing it's another sensor. That said I have to wait to do this 'cause the TPR sensor I just had replaced failed not 24hrs after they installed it so maybe it's time to tie this beast to the tracks and wait for the train.
If the red light and abs light are on, check the fluid level in the master cylinder. If it is low, that will cause both lights. This is due to the fact that there is not enough fluid in the master cylinder to allow an abs stop. Not many things cause both lights to come on at the same time. Someone might have just pulled the code and gone with the first thing that made sense to repair it.
Fluids are all checked on a regular basis and was the first thing I checked when lights came on, all roads led to speed sensors but the dealer put it on their scanner and came up with the ECU being bad. According to the service manager it's another electrical failure and I can't do it. The first code that came up is for the original problem of the TPS being bad. That was fixed and lasted about 24hrs.
