Chroming factory wheels?

Has anybody ever thought about chroming their factory aluminum wheels? Or even done it? Thoughts? Ideas?

A few people have, but honestly, I think most people have the same opion about it that I do. A set of chrome aftermarket wheels will look much better and probably not cost much more.

$1200 for the wheels I want vs $? for chroming... I doubt it'd be $1200.
I will be getting wheels one of these days, but, they wouldn't be my wintertime wheels. And in the mean time, these wheels do need some help... They have the standard pitting problems and such.

Find a local chrome shop and check prices with em.
I'd bet you'll be pretty close to $800 for a chrome job...especially if they have to do the prep work. Prep includes stripping any clearcoat or anodizing off the aluminum and polishing them before plating.

If your rims are pitted, those pits need to be polished out before plating. The plating won't hide it, it will make the tiniest pits stick out like a sore thumb!

If you want chrome OEMs, try digging around on ebay. Some of the wheel refinishing places that sell OEM wheels do occasionally have chromed versions for sale. They're not as common as the standard finish but you might find em. Another semi-cheap chrome option would be to scrounge up a set of the 00-03 5-spoke Expedition rims in chrome. You can find em refinished for around $100 each, maybe cheaper if you can find a used set.

DUH...I mis-read your post and didn't see you've got a F250. Look for chrome Excursion rims instead of Expy rims. :o My bad.

A full strip, acid bath, nickel plate, polish, copper plate, polish, and double chrome dip with freight will cost you WAY more than most of the chrome wheels we offer with finish warranties.

There's a big difference between a chrome job, and a PROPER chrome job, and only a handful of places in the country do a proper job anymore. EPA regulations and the labor make it too hard to do and make any money at.

I would rather buy a set of new chrome rims than have my factory rims chromed. The cost is almost the same anyways. Just my opinion.
