How wide can/should I go?

Hi, I hope you guys can help. I'm going back to my stock 17" (2005 FX4) rims for winter and I need new tires. I'd like to go with an All Terrain tire and have been told I can go up a 265/70/17. Can I go to a 275/70/17 on the stock wheels? They have 255/70/17's on now.
Also, any recommendations on which tire?
Thanks

I agree, a 285x70x17 AT would look and work great. Nitto, Toyo or BFG.

I am personally partial to the BFG's myself, however, Toyo A/T's are another great choice.

A lot of people have run 315mm wide tires on the oem wheels without any problems, but a 285mm wide tire would be your best choice.
