swapping wheels and TPMS?

my new (used) '07 f150 has the TPMS system (i dont know if they all do).

What happens now when I buy a new set of wheels to run in the winter? How much will it cost for a shop to swap my OEM sensors over from the OEM wheels to the new wheels and then back again in the spring time?

Should I buy a new set of sensors and have them installed in the new wheels?

Is there any advantage to buying used OEM wheels as opposed to used aftermarket wheels or probably not since most OEM wheels being sold will have had their TPMS sensors removed also?

Just trying to get an idea of what kind of costs are goingt o be associated with swapping to and from winter wheels and what additoinal considerations are needed when dealing with TPMS

thanks!

If you go this route it's going to get expensive since you have to have the tires removed twice and then re-balanced. Plus, you would have to get new TPMS straps!

Yes, you should be able to find a nice used set on ebay.

Most OEM wheels for sale will have their TPMS removed, unless the tires are still on them. This is because all four sensors have are programmed to the truck.

Most of the time, taking the stock ones of your wheels will be a pain because the OEM strap can not be reused once it is cut off. Do not let the dealer order you straps. They can be found much cheaper online - including Ebay! Now, the dealer can do the TPMS programming, but most competent tire shops should have the equipment to do it much cheaper! Call around.

thanks!

thanks for the info!

So when do the straps need ot be replaced? when you take a tire off of a wheel or when you take a wheel (with a tire on it) off of the truck?

Also as far as "reprogramming" goes does this need to be done whenever I take wheels off of the truck?
Whenever I swap from one set of wheels to a new one?
Or maybe just when putting a set of TPMS sensors on the truck that havent been on it before (this would mean when I buy new wheels and sensors I need to get them programmed when Iput them on but when I swap back from the new wheels to my OEM ones in the spring everything is already programmed)?

You only need straps in you intend to remove the sensors from the wheels. Just removing the tires doesn't affect the sensors. But transferring the sesnors from one wheel to another is where you need another set of straps.

You only need to get programming done if you want to swap sensors. IE - you have another complete set of wheels and tires with a 2nd set of sensors installed. When you put the new setup on - the truck will not recongize the new sensors. This is when you'll need them programmed. Then, when you go back to your other set of wheels / tires - you'll have to have the originals programmed back. Kind of a pain in the but!

I learned all this the hard way with my '07 Harley F-150. I upgraded to the '08 Harley wheels and found out the 22" strap cost around $ 80 each from the dealer! I found a much cheaper place online.

I'd suggest you get a TPMS retraining transmitter ford part # 8C2Z1A203A List $18.92.

You can then use it to retrain your system when ever you change out wheels with different sensors or tires with different pressure characteristics

Why bother with sensors for a set of winter wheels/tires. You'll have to deal with an annoying idiot light for the winter, but that's it. Another set of sensors will cost you some extra money and each time you swap the wheels you'll have to go thru the hassle of retraining the sensors to the truck.
