02 Screw fX4: 275's or 285's?

Ok, time for some new tires. 2002 Screw FX4, 5.4, 3.55ls, stock 265/70/17.

My Revos are at 4/32 after 33k miles. I made the mistake of buying P tires, and towing my boat (4500#) has caused these tires to wear quickly. This time, I will be buying LT tires, either 275/70/17 or 285/70/17. I'm having a hard time deciding which size though. I defnitely need to go larger, I have air bags in the back and even at 10psi, they have raised the back over 1/2". I also have the front bars cranked a little. I just don't want to go too large and kill my mpg and towing (although I'm thinking 4.10's in the future, 3.55's are horrible, especially in the mountains).

For 275's, I would be getting the Firestone Destination AT's. For 285's, I'm looking at BFG AT, Hankook RF10, Toyo AT, and Destination AT's. I bought my Revos from Costco, and they are willing to give me ~$200 credit for the premature wear, but they can't get a 275 tire and are hassling me over the 285s, saying I need a letter from Ford saying they will fit properly .

Anyway, I have a dilema over the 285s. I have 2 pics to show the difference. No offense intended to either truck owner. Both are stock with 285/70/17 BFG, however they look completely different.

First is APT's, which I think looks perfect and I would be very happy with this:

Next is Sundevil2188, to me the tires look too large and stuff the wheelwells:

Why such a difference in appearance? Any suggestions for my application?

Thanks for all the input!

looks almost as if the green truck has a body lift, hidden by the step tubes. go with the 285 BFG or Toyo and if you're towing i'd make sure its at least an 8 ply
