35" tires & speedometer calibration question
35" tires & speedometer calibration question
Has anyone had their spedo recalabrated after putting on 35" tire? Dealer says they cant do it for that size and to look for aftermarket calibration.
It seems to be a good 10 mph off which seems high. Also could this effect the trans or torque converter operation?

Yes, since your speedometer is affected and the tranny shifts at certain speeds, it's all linked. Time to get a tuner! You will need it anyway to make up for lost power.

A much discussed subject. Do an "advanced search" on the subject. It can.

A dealer will always try to void a warranty if they can. The law says they have to prove that the modification was a direct result of the failure. That is were it gets sticky. There are some dealers that are lenient, others that are basically turds. No clear cut answer. If it is a major concern, I would wait till warranty is about up.

Does the gearing void warranty? The lift shouldnt I would hope.

I think if you change a light bulb, it voids the warranty. It's ridiculous. Anything you do, supposedly voids the warranty but is only supposed to void the warranty for the part affected. I've heard of Ford voiding the warranty on a tranny over a body lift.
Before the tuner era for my truck, there was only the chip. I had to install a Superchip in my truck to calibrate my speedo and I regeared. I was 20 mph off. Now I'm 1 mph off.
Tuner is your #1 option. There are aftermarket speedo products like Accuspeed, Hypertech and I know there's another one.
Like the others said, if you're worried about the warranty, just wait. I modified my truck 2 weeks after I bought it new and to heck with the warranty.
No problems in 6 years.

I went with an Edge programmer to adjust for 35" tires and to help with the shift point's of the tranny to help this heavy truck get moving. My speed was off 5 to 6mph and the programmer has it just about right on the money. Also I'm averaging 16 to 17 mpg on the highway even with these tall tires. If you can't afford to re-gear a programmer is the way to go, custom tunes are even better.
Thanks all.
Hey, Blonde Ambition.
Dont really want to go with a full tuner but which speedo products you think is better Accuspeed or Hypertech.
This is still a work truck and want reliability most of all. Went with the lift, gears, & tires so to get around the ranch better.

Your dealer can recalibrate your speedometer. I'm getting mine done early next month when i get outta town, 45 bucks and guarnteed to be accurate within 1mph. i know the dealer in town has no idea/the equipment to do it so, i'd just try bigger dealers in your area. And they gave me the whole blah-blah tuners void the warranty, on a diesel i can understand but eitherway i guess.
