OK...so heres something I never realized.

I got some upgraded aluminum OEM wheels to replace my unattractive stockers. Unbeknownst to me that my basic XL truck had a tire pressure monitoring system. My new wheels didnt have the sensors on them. The guy at the tire shop told me it could be a problem. I went ahead and had them mount them anyway. Well...as soon as I started the truck the light came on on the display. Am I stuck staring at this light now or is there a way it can be turned off? I dont really care to have a TPMS on my truck as I am bright eneough to know if I have a low tire. What can I do guys?

Hey Sean....

Yea'..... the dreaded TPMS PITA ! I found out about this, months before I got my truck (of course "I had months" waiting on my truck, to find out)

Anyway, the guy at the shop should have told you that you would immediatly get that warning light.... and also, that (for a cost) you can have the sensors on your stock wheels, switched over to your new, aftermarket wheels. Around here, most places will try to bend you over the front counter, and charge you like $150 to $200, or more to do this.... but it's really not that big of a deal, for somebody that 1) knows what they are doing, and 2) isn't trying to rip you off. Again, that's rare around my area.

Oh, and if this isn't a big enough PITA, once you have swapped them over, your computer has to be reset to recognize the new sensor postions, and maybe tire pressures..... Again, around here that might be another $100.... unless you know somebody...

Peace,
Fish

sean46....If the light bothers you and you dont want to bother with fixing the TPMS, stick a small peice of dark tape over the light. If you do want to fix then you dont have to buy new sensors. Just buy a set of bands from Ebay or aftermarket wheel Co. and switch your old sensors to the new wheels. Make sure they go back on the same wheel they came from and mount the cradles 180 degrees from the valve stem then you won't have to recalibrate.

That's good to know. Thank you.

Grand!!!! Not what I really wanted to hear. I thought this was the sort of thing you would see on higher dollar vehicles.....not on a stripped vehicle. Ford did us all no favors on this! I guess I will just stick a piece of tape over the light, although it sucks having to do that to a truck with 1,500 miles on it.

On a bright note they did make the truck look nicer.

To reset the computer, all you need to do is disconnect the negative battery terminal then reconnect it...

Fyi

Just wanted to add to this in case no one was aware. The GREEN valve stem caps found on newer cars signify the tires are filled with Nitrogen. Supposed to increase gas mileage. I'm not sure if it makes a difference to the TPMS if you run air or nitrogen but I thought I'd add the comment.

Kinda makes me wonder what most people do with their new wheels. Switch the sensors or just deal with the light?

Ford only followed the law. They are required on ALL 2007 and newer vehicles.

Sean,
You need to get them put on the new wheels. I don't know if your state has safety inspections or not but if they do, it won't pass with that light on. They don't here atleast.

Pics of the new wheels would be cool!
