MT vs. AT
MT vs. AT
ok. so i have a 2wd with 305/65/18 bfg at's. almost worn and i really like Mud terrains. Bfg km2, cooper stt, and toyo mt's, although bfg km2 is the only one who makes the size i need without getting new rims, (FX4) my question is how well do the wear and handle, i do minor off road but love the look. the cost from the bfg at to mt is minimal, so should i do it, get the mt km2's?
You wont be disappointed with any of those tires. The KM2's are the best MT on the market right now, close behind is Toyo. You wont get the samw life span as your BFG TA KO's but thats expected!
Check Procomp Extreme AT very aggressive looking AT

x2 on everything u said. And you will get the best wear out of the BFG AT'S
If most of your driving is on the highway I would stick to AT's, the MT's can get a little hairy in the rain. I can't get my BFG AT's to wear out, may be the best all-around tire ever made.
Love my BFG'S
These are by far the best wearing tire on the road today. I have 90,000 miles on the rear set and around 40,000 on the front set and are showing NO signs of needing replacement. Had to replace the ones on the front at two different times, one got a railroad spike in it and the other gave out on the road at 55 mph, must have run over something b/c the tire kinda shredded, so couldn't really tell what happened!

Most people buy M/T tires strictly for looks, but most people don't drive through mud pits to get to work everyday, or even have the necessity for mud tires 99.76945% of the time.
Get a good A/T tire that has highway manners, low noise, good wet/snow traction yet will still get you there for those odd and typical offroading needs.
It just depends on what YOU want. I ONLY run MT tires and have for many years because I go into some hairy places when I'm hunting or fishing or even just driving around my property. I have run most big name brand of mud tires and just purchased my first set of Cooper STT's. They are by far the quietest mud tires I have ever owned, they perform very well on wet roads and are wicked in the mud.
If you want a set of mud tires then you should check out the STT's. You won't be sorry you did!

Pro Comp Xtreame mud terrains
ALL tires are compromises between great on road driving to great off road driving. The best tire for the street would be one with no tread and supper sticky rubber, and yes, even in the rain as testing has proven the compounds make a huge difference. But that is a compromise, they do not work well on roads that get dirt on them and you will be lucky to get 5,000 miles on them. Off road is no different, mud, rocks, driving fast all require different tires. The bottom line is, it is your choice, what are you willing to give up to get what you want?
My expy is a daily driver but when I go out in the woods or desert, I want to go places and be able to get back. I had the BFG All terrains. Great tire, but not that capable off road. There were times I worried about getting through areas. Way back when I was young I had a VERY NICE Toy that could climb a tree, it had the BFG Mud terrains. I LOVED THOSE TIRES! But now, with a family and finances being tight, I can not get what I want necissarily. I just put some Pro Comp X muds on yesterday. They are not as noisy as I though however they ride rough and are a bit squirrly on pavement. I expected this, well except for the rough ride. I traded road manners for being able to get to and get out of where I wanted but, wanted something that wasn't too bad on the road and was not terribly expensive. I got out with 4- 285-75 16s with a warrant at $865. The BFG muds would have set me back about $300 more. If money were no object, I would go back to the BFG Muds again.
I was seriously thinking about the Xterrains but the salesman told me they make more noise and require a bit more maint. More balancing etc. The PC all terrain had the same balancing issues and were not agressive enough for me.
My 2 cents.

Ya' know what ???
lets put it this way....I was contemplating this earlier.....
How many of you would spend $5000 on a set of tires, just because the tread looked a little more agressive ???
Well, if you would pay $1000 on a set of BFG AT's which might last an average of say 75K miles, "OR" the same $1000 on the Mud Terrains which might last 15K, or 1/5th of what the BFG AT's will last, you will have essentially spent 5 X's as much on the Mud Terrains "per mile of use" that you get out of them.
Personally speaking, I could see spending 20% or 25% more for some really cool, tough looking tires, but NOT 500% more ! That just seems flat out foolish to me. But then, I'm a poor guy. I guess if you have $$$ coming out your ears.... more power to you. (oh BTW, if that's the case, my birthday's in August ;-)
Peace,
Fish
