17" or 16" Wheels...

My 1997 F150 4x4 came stock with the ugly 17" sawblade rims . I've continually put 285/70/17 BFG KO's on the truck at $225 a pop . They've been great tires and got over 50K miles on each set with equal wear. Now my truck mostly sits and I only put about 5k miles a year on it. Time for tires again...

Will 16" rims fit on my truck? I am asking because I can buy rims and Kuhmro or other off-brand tires for the same price as the BFG's and make my truck look quite a bit better with the new rims .

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yeah, but the 17;s are butt ugly. I can get some nice 16's and make it look better...will 16's interfere with the drum or calipers...or anything else?

You could also just get some nice 17's and you will have more options for the 17's. I am doing 10% off ultra rims right now if you see anything you like.

I totally appreciate the input...but...I can get some nice 16's from a friend for darn near free...will they fit or interfere? If they will fit, then I'll pick up some scrub tires and call it good while saving some cash. This is not a vehicle that I drive at all anymore. Just to tow a boat now and then.

Will 16's interfere with anything?

Alon - quote me some 17" rims and tires (285)...

Right now, I can get (4) used but nice rims 16 x 8 for $200. Tires for $125/ea... for $700, I am in business for a vehicle I rarely use.

Not creating a great truck, just creating a usable vehicle to save some cash. My remainder cash goes into the bikes!

Have you looked my site already? There are many different 17" rims... I cant just give you a price on rims and tires without knowing which rims and tires you are looking at.

As far as tires go, we sell for the same price tire rack has... since we are not in the business to sell tires, just sell them and mount them as a service to go along with the rims.

A question from the simple-minded

I just purchased a 2003 F150 not because I wanted a truck but because I needed something to haul my motorcycle out of El Paso to somewhere nice to ride.

This truck has what are apparently 16" stock wheels. They do not offend.

What operational advantage would be gained by going to a larger tire, given that I want to use the truck as a prime mover and let the cycle give me sex appeal....

None. 17s weigh more, the wheels along cost more, the tires for 17s cost more compared to 17s, and there are a lot more selections of tire sizes out there for 16s compared to 17s.

Unless you wanted to go up a size for looks, which you said you didnt, then there is no point in going with 17s over 16s.

Hey ljjohns! The only advantage would be a little more ground clearance with a larger tire but it would not be a whole lot if the truck has stock suspension, when you start going with bigger tires it effects just about everything, you will lose some gas milage, it puts more wear on the steering linkages and the drive train on the truck like the transmission and the gears also, hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll keep checking the forum but what you two have said affirms my suspicions.

I don't want to denigrate the F150--we are actually excited about it for the power and comfort it offers, as well as the reliability.

El Paso is not a good place for using a touring motorcycle: there's too much "slab" between here and anywhere where the riding is interesting. We have kids in Austin's hill country with bikes, but that's 500 miles of nothing to get there. Other friends are in Phoenix, but that's almost as much "nothing." And we have a great ride planned through Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Glacier with friends this summer, but it starts in Dillon which is 1500 miles of nothing from here.

So we'll leave things as they are and see how things work out, enjoying the F150's ability to get us comfortably where we want to go, and then be ready for a different kind of fun.

Again, thanks.

You can buy Kumoh Road Ventura AT Tires in a 285/70/17 for around $165usd a pop for your truck if you shop around.
No need to buy new rims...
