285 + width of tire in millimeters (11.2 +/- wide)
75 = height of sidewall in terms of the % of tire width (75% or 285 = 213.75) (213.75mm = 8.4" +/-)
16 is the rim diameter in inches.
If you take the rim diameter and add the sidewall height for each side of the tire you get the total height.
16+8.4+8.4= 32.8"
Of course the actual size can vary a bit depending on the manufacturer. Hopefully that helps.

If you are doing a tire with a standard tread code like 265 70 17 type in tire size calculator in google, and click on the first one its some Mazda miata sight, but type your old tire in then the new one and it shows a picture of the difference in sizes then tells you all the info it knows about both tires works for me, and best of all no adding!
basically a 33x11.5... i ust got mine put on on friday BFG... but like most pointed out without actually comin out and saying it tires depending on manufacturer dont run a true size even if its in a stardard size (33x12.5) they usually are off anyway.
