E-brake Help

Do I really need to run with my e-brake connected? The pads and ALL the parts for the e-brake on the driver and passenger side rear wheels are no longer alive. Parts are bent, broken, and missing! The rear brakes SEEM to be working fine. We made it home (about 25 miles) from where we were messing around with no problems.

Any help will help

I'm trying to figure out why you would not want to it. I can't stand to have anything not work on my truck even if I don't use it. To me the e-brake is an important safety feature. If it wasn't, I think they would just make it an option. Think about your question again. I hope some of those broken and bent parts don't lock up a rear wheel while you're thinking about it.

I just looked at your truck again and now I feel better about mine. It doesn't look nowhere near as nice as yours but everything works on it.

OKAY! Thanks for taking the time to answer my post but if you not willing to help why dont you just stay away from it. Ive used this forum many times to ask for help and always gotten great help. Like they say, theres always "one".

I am planning on fixing it, I wanted to know if it was alright to run it like that for a couple days because I am not at home right now and staying in a small town that really doesnt have much of anything as far as help, especially if youre not from here. I would have to take care of it next weekend. Why would I spend so much money on a truck and not fix it?

Ive already taken all the loose parts out. There is nothing left in there that will make it "lock up". I know I didnt put all the details in the first post but if you would have asked instead of being a smart a$$ I would have let you know.

Once again, thank you for your time! Now, why dont you hop in youre truck and drive into wall as fast as you can without wearing your seat-belt!

You know, I went to bed shortly after posting that and was thinking about it when I fell asleep and felt really bad about it. I apologize. Yesterday was a day from hell at work and I guess I was just in a pissy mood.

To answer your question, driving without the e-brake hooked up can't be any worse than driving with an e-brake that doesn't work due to a seized/broken cable or not adjusted properly. If all the components are out of the drum it shouldn't affect normal braking since it's two seperate systems.

Milo99, sounds good, but when you go to re-assemble, take that hook that goes to the cable that pivots and wire wheel the sh+t out of it. Put lots, and I mean a good amount between them before you sandwich them together again. Anti-seize the points that contact the shoes, top and bottom as well as those backing plate contact points (look like a square pimple) that will contact the lining preventing it from going into the backing plate. I like and prefer to use all new springs, clips and adjusters unless yours are fine, clean and leave em then. Obviously new shoes are needed, no? All the parts will cost under a hundred (should anyways). Just a few tips that saved me from having to do this yearly, going on 2.5 years since I even looked at them and they still work great, my adjuster is loose but the rotors can fall off and the e-brakes still do their jobs, after many headaches with them, I'm happy now.

Thanks, will do! I wanna try to take care of it this weekend. Im in New Mexico right now and customer service around here does not exist if you are not from this town. Im planning on ordering everything new. Everthing that was in there is in some way jacked up. I could hear everything rattling around when I lowered my window. Then I had to make it back to the road and back to town. When I took off the rotor on the driver side everything just fell out, same on the passenger side. It was pretty funny!

Ditto on that tip. A couple years ago I had a bad vibration that would happen randomly at highway speeds. It felt like I had a large lump or something in a tire. Thanks to some searching here I found the problem was that pivot on the driver's side was siezed. Once I cleaned it and anti-siezed it the vibration dissapeared.

Here's the old post that shows the pivot (expander cam) we're talking about.
