Need Help With Tire Selection
Need Help With Tire Selection
New to the site (Kudos on the total outlay). My question is this:
My son has a 2005 Ford F-150 4x4 extended cab with stock P235/70/17 rims and since it's his first truck he's working the old man (me) on bigger tires! I have agreed to bite the bullet and get him the largest tire size available without replacing the rims (always a catch). I just installed a 3" lift kit on the front strut assembly to accomodate a larger tire. He is determined to get the "Nitto" brand "Terra Grappler AT" in size 285/70/17 but, to me they look like junk (thus, this is why I'm here).
Am I being mislead by his selection and/or what would be a quality tire and maximum size that would be safe and reliable for a vehicle that will be driven off-road sometimes?
Any suggestion would be greatly appreaciated!
Thanks

The Nitto Terra Grapplers are one of the best all terrian tires available. THey are also a good value. Nitto is a division of Toyo Tire, which has an excellent reputation for quality. The Toyo AT is almost identical, but is usually a little more expensive. As for size, you can easily fit 285/70-17's (33x11.50) on a stock 4x4. Since you have a leveling kit, I'd suggest the 295/70-17 (34x12.00) size. Both will fit easily using the OEM wheels and a leveling kit, in fact several members have fit 35x12.50's (315/70-17's) on 04-08 4x4's by using a leveling kit and the OEM wheels.
x2 (on what Wandell says) I too would look for 295/70-17. Your kid will love the extra ground clearance and the extra aggressive stance. You may also want to look into the Pro-Comp Extreme All terrain. A great tire, handles real well on street, but also give enough bite when off-road (also guarenteed for 40,000 miles). You can also get these tire at a great deal. If you are leaning towards these or just wana see what prices are out there for those sized tires give Josh a call. 1-866-922-0093 ext. 106.
