04 F150 Caliper shot

My 04 F150 with 45K just went through a front calipers.

I just put new tires on and on my third trip it felt like the brakes were on. The damn thing would not coast. I thought it might be the resistence of the new tires. When I got where I was going I notices as I walked by the front passenger side that the brakes were red hot. I pulled the wheels off today and found that the caliper will not release.

Should I do both or just the one that went bad?

I guess since they got red hot I should replace the rotors and pads?

Do both sides, calipers, rotors, and pads. Ford made changes to both rotors and calipeers. Also, if you have aftermarket wheels, some 17" will not fit with the new parts. If you have OLE wheels, you will be okay.

Thanks for the info...

So I assume I should get Ford Parts then? Will I automatically get the updated parts?

You should, but I would verify when you order. As far as Ford parts, that is up to you. There are aftermarket out there, but which is best I can't say.

The fact that it occurred when you got new wheels seems related - take a good look at the caliper to see if the shop that mounted/balanced them did any damage. Perhaps they busted it up by hitting it hard with the wheel???

If so, I'd go after them to fix it.

If there isn't any visible damage to the caliper, I would first attempt to clean and grease the pins. This might fix the problem for about 5 bucks worth of steel wool and caliper grease.

While you're at it... clean and grease both sides.

It was just new tires I got on my stock 18's. And seeing that I mounted, balanced, and installed my own, I am pretty sure I didn't hit them.

I just put new pads on about 10,000 miles ago (1 year almost to date) and I installed new pins at that time. My old Ranger would go through pads if the pins were bad, so I figured for a few bucks, it was worth it since I had the pads off..

There was a problem with sticking calipers. Part of the reason they changed calipers and rotors. There is a TSB out there about it, but if you are off warranty, it doesn't help you with the cost.

would you like a cookie???

welcome to the site... next time though, post some information (truck model/options, year) so we have a frame of reference for your comment.

new boots should be a quick, easy fix. They are rubber sleeves that go over the pins to keep the dirt out. Hopefully the mechanic also cleaned and regreased the pins since there was probably some dirt in there from the damaged boots.

Thanks, but no thanks. Maybe a tissue.
I posted previously - '04 f150screw 4x4.
Nope, he didn't bother to tell me that. Only seemed concern that they (calipers) were difficult to remove ..uh oh....
So I don't need new calipers - unless somehow they were damaged - only new boots?

New hoses? Wow, really?

My buddy got me new calipers, rotors and pads from Kar Quest. They threw in the pas for free because I just put the pads on about 12,000k ago. They said they would warrenty them.

Both sides, for everything cost me about 250... I hope the calipers I am getting have the update to them.

yaaaa... I'm not going to search through your previous posts to try and find your vehicle info. I'm helpful, but not that helpful.
You should put your vehicle info in your profile - then it shows up on the top right corner of every post.

I doubt you'd need new calipers. Just clean and grease the pins and install new boots. But its hard to say for sure without seeing the parts firsthand.
