Tire advice

I have a 02 Screw, 5.4, daily driver, all stock. Yeah I know... what a boring story. Gotta do what I gotta do though. Mileage to work everyday is a killer and a pickup is essential. Need new skins again, replaced originals with REVO's last go-round - great tires! Would love to bump the size just a touch taller and wider... come on humor me! How does a minor tire modification effect mileage and speedo? Would appreciate some honest input.

All terrain or Mud terrain? 4x4 or 4x2?

I got some 33" nitto terra grapplers on my stock 97 and am happy with them so far.

Looks good on all! So what's the damage you all are seeing in fuel mileage with 33's underneath? Much of a sacrifice?

Aren't you getting like 12 MPG?

That's a big step down from the 15-17 my truck is getting. I'd have 35's on in a heart beat, but I couldn't stand being that slow and putting undue stress on the tranny. Once I have the money for gears to go with the tires, they'll be on.

Right on... my concern was the mpg and the nasty side effects from the larger tires without any mods. Love to raise it and fill those empty wheel wells but just not sure if I can find the funds for a properly done project. Might just have to do a small tire size bump for now...

Since your public profile states your truck is an XLT I am assuming it has the factory 17" wheels still on it. If so I would take a close look at the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor in 285/70R17. While not huge it's still quite a bit taller at around 32.7" tall and quite a bit wider. Look on www.tirerack.com exact specs. and it gets great reveiws.

I'm in the minority here no doubt. It seems people on this forum swear by B. F. Goodrich All Terrain for their 4x4's.

Too bad Michelin doesn't make the LTX A/T (the original A/T not the A/T2) in 17" and 18" sizes. I can tell you for a fact that they are some of the best tires I've ever had. I put some on a 1995 F150 at around 89,000 miles I sold the truck at 171,000 miles. They weren't all the way worn out either.

I you limit the tire size to a 33" fuel mileage won't be too bad, when you jump to a 35" your mileage will drop 1 to 2 mpg mainly in stop and go driving. The 285's sound right for you.

XLT actually fitted with 16's but the 285's sound like the right move without losing my day-to-day efficiency for work. Thanks to all for the input.

Just put on a set of silent armors last week. Beautiful looking tire, quiet, ride Aw sum tread . But the side walls do appear weak. I have a stone driveway and thought I was losing pressure but it was ok. Could be a kevlar thing. Hasn't affected the mileage so far and I can't complain at all. Actually they are quite beautiful. It took many years for me to get another set of Good for a Year tires but so far I think these are a great quality tire. They have a multi compound and This is their comeback kid.
