tire width? help

ok, i went to go get some prices on new tires today. i decided im going to go with the cooper st. i want to go with 33x12.5x17. but they said that the 33s would be to wide for my rim. cooper recommends that the rim be atleast 8.5" wide. and my stock rim is only 7.5" wide. will this tire still work or should i go with the 285 70 17? i would really like to go with the bigger tire, but dont want to create problems with the rim not being wide enough. any ideas? thanks

I wouldn't worry about it. I have 33-12.50-17's ordered for my truck and am leaving the stock wheels. I had 35-12.50-17's on my '02 with stock wheels and everything was fine.

I agree. Just keep your eye on your tire pressure and treadwear. If you run it too high, the center portion of the tread will wear slightly faster.
