Highway tires vs. all-terrain tires
Highway tires vs. all-terrain tires
I just picked up a new set of rims for my 4x4 SCREW. I was thinking about running a summer set of tires and a winter/hunting set. I run Revo's right now. I looked into highway type tires, with less aggressive tread. I was surprised to find out that they aren't any cheaper, and don't seem to offer any better treadwear. I'm not sure how many miles I'll get out of the Revo's, but manufacturer specs don't look any better for other styles (so far as treadwear warranty and all.)
I'm very pleased with the ride and noise of the Revo's. That said, what would be the advantage to going with a less-aggressive tire? Surely they are better for something, or everyone would just run A/T's. What am I missing? Should I just run Revo's all year round? Just curious, thinking I'm missing something on the highway tire side. Thanks!

Less aggressive treads have a few advantages.
1.Usually a lot quieter.
2. They will give better dry road traction, more rubber on the road.
3. Same with wet road. They will have less of a tendency to slide or spin.
Disadvantages.
1. Worse in snow.
2. Worse in mud.
3. Noisey.
I also run 2 sets of tires. Summer is what was on the truck when I bought it, currently Hankooks, although that will change soon. I will probably put on a set of Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors. Winter I have a set of BFG All Terrain TAs. These are far better than the Wranglers in snow, but worse on wet.

Each manufacturer has their own rating system for treadwear. So, a 500 rating from BFG will be different than 500 from Michelin, for example. If you like the Revos, the only thing I can think of is some highway tires will last 50% longer and have better wet and maybe better snow traction on the road.
Revos are great tires. I had 2 sets on my old ranger. The first set lasted atleast 50,000 some miles, maybe close to 60,000, I don't remember for sure. The second set I sold the ranger way before the tires wore down. If your happy with the tires now I wouldn't both switching back and forth.
