so confused

Hey all, I'm new to the site. So, no crap here I am, wife sitting next to me telling me to order whatever wheels and tires I want. I own a new 2006 F-150 FX4 and I am getting a Fabtech 6" next week. So I am very confused about all the numbers and stuff while looking at wheels and tires. Since there are not alot of lifted trucks in my area I cant really compare the differences. If anyone could help out it would be greatly appreciated. My truck will see more road than off road and I like more black than chrome wheels. Not sure to go with 20's or 18". I was looking at pro-comp wheels and pro comp X terrain tires or X terrain mud terrain tires. Am I looking in the right area? I want that aggressive appearence with the ability to go off roading whenever need be. Can anyone assist me with some options, i have about $8K to finish this project. Thanks

Pop into the suspension forum first. Read some about the different suspension lifts and what kind of problems people have with different kits. Some have problems with shocks, springs geometry etc. I don't have a 4x4 but read some when I get bored just to see whats going on.

You may want to factor in gearing depending on what you have now since the bigger tires greatly affect the driveability.

Notsosmart, I am kinda in the same boat as you, only several months of reading ahead of you. I like the black wheels as well.

Assuming where you live has similar regulations as where I do, first question you need to ask yourself is do you want/like the looks of fender flares. Pretty much any wheel/tires you get are going to make your tires stick out further than your stock ones. Lots of places frown on this (hence the need to get fender flares). If you don't mind the flares, the door is wide open for you in terms of wheel selection. I don't really like fender flares, so i am trying to minimize the amount my new wheels will stick out.

I'm also planning on getting a Fabtech 6" and have contacted Fabtech to see what size wheels they built their lift around. They set it up for an 8 or 9 inch wheel with 5.0" of backspacing. I am looking at 17" wheels because i like the look of a lot of tire. Most Pro Comp wheels have 4.5" or 4.75' of backspacing which will make the wheels stick out quite a bit compared to the stock. Also, a nice set of black wheels are the MotoMetal 951B's. Their backspacing is also somewhere around 4.5" giving you the same result. There are 2 black wheels that i've found that are reasonably priced (btwn 150-180 per wheel) that have decent backspacing. The DEJ Cannon (american racing) and the XD Diesel's. I think i've finally given up and am going to go with Mickey Thompson Classic II's (17x9 w/ 5.5" backspacing) as these will give me the same result of the 17x8 w/5.0" b/s that Fabtech built their kit around.

A general rule of thumb for figuring out how much further your wheels will stick out compared to stock is as follows:
Most 04+ stock wheels are 7.5" wide with 5.5" Backspacing (Take 7.5-5.5=2)
Example: New wheels are 9" wide with 5.5" Backspacing (Take 9-5.5=3.5)
Compare new vs. stock (3.5-2=1.5).
Therefore, your new wheels will stick out approx 1.5" further than stock.
IMPORTANT - keep in mind this is the distance your wheels will stick out, this does not account for going with bigger tires.

In my case, i am looking to move up from my stock 285x70x18 to a 35x12.50x17 which is giving me an additional tire width of a little less than 2".

Hopefully this will help you out a little bit.

I'd suggest a quality all terrian tire like the BFG AT KO, Pro Comp Xtreme AT, Nitto Terra Grappler or Toyo AT. I'd go with an 18x9 inch wheel with 5 to 6 inches of backspacing and a 325/65-18 (35x13.00) tire. KMC makes some sweet black wheels.

Go with an 18x9 inch wheel with 5 inch backspacing and a 325/65-18 35x13.00 tire. That should get you what you want and need.

The more aggressive tires look cool and handle well off road but are noisy and were out faster , I installed 17" Moto Medal Black rimms and 35+12+5 Pro comp , in hind sight 20" would look better but takes more brake to stop and I like a lot of tire.
With a large tire you will need a steeing stabilizer Fabtech sells a duel shock one for $169.00

I'm not a fan of the black wheels, but if I were to go with black it would only be the black version of my current wheel, Helo Maxx 6's. Also I have the Pro Comp Xtreme AT's, they look very aggressive and aren't loud at all. That combo in an 18" would be my suggestion.
