Wrangler Silent Armors - input?

Hi all,

Well, it's time to replace my front tires. Since my current Wrangler AT/S's are probably one of the worst tires I have ever owned I will be replacing all 4.

I am thinking of getting the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor in 275/70/18. I can get those for about $190.00 locally.

I was wondering if anyone has any input, or can recommend something different.

I have the stock 18" Lariat wheels and the front is levelled with Bilstein 5100's. I do about 30k miles a year (almost all highway). I occasionally go "off-road" meaning dirt logging roads, but no mudding or anything like that. I do see a fair amount of snow in the winters, so I need something that will be good in the snow.

Aside from that I would like to keep it under $200 per tire.

Thanks in advance!
Caanan

I run these same tires.

They ride awesome and are quiet.
The user reviews are all positive at tirerack.com.

They are the second highest rated tire in their class.

user reviews

rating

They are supposed to wear long and be good in snow.
Look for the reviewer that claims "best tire I ever plowed snow with" !

I have mounted up pics in my gallery.

Nice pics - they look great!

Did you go with the factory size on those? I don't really need the taller tire, just thought it may be worth a try. I saw a few people say they noticed a drop in MPG after installing these, did you see a change?

thanks!

Yes, I used stock 275/65/18 size.
If you can find the 275/70/18, I'd do it.

The difference is only 1" (33" vs 32"), but it would fill the wheelwell a little better. I have no regrets with the stock size though.

Drop in MPG??
I'm not sure. I bought the truck used with four baldies on it. I changed all 4 tires days after buying it. A bigger tire might reduce MPG a little, but 1" shouldn't even be noticable.

In the user reviews only one (2?) guys mention reduced MPG. Tweakers possibly??

They do look good. Rugged but no "look at me" lugs that you don't need.

I've always had the AT/S in 265/70/17 size and found they were fantastic in every way. For my uses, they were fine. I even got 90k km's out of a set or more and am not easy on tires (often squeeling, ya know that sorta stuff). I even tried a few burnouts with em. I got the Silent's now because they came in 285's and love them even more. Great choice in my opinion.

i went with the silent armors as well. love mine, look great, handle well and worked excellent in the snow this past winter. if you can get them for $190 each grab them. i paid over $250 Canadian each for mine, and that was after there rebate they had last fall.

Well the tires came in this afternoon and I just mounted them. I just drove them up and down the street, but so far I like them.

I will post again once I put a few miles on them.

In the meantime here are a couple pics

the drop in mpg with these tires may not necessarily be from the size difference. where i work, we sell a lot of these tires, so i usually mount at least one set per day. they are extremely heavy tires, much heavier than any other tire we sell in the same size, which is not necessarily a bad thing!! they are extremely heavy duty tires with a ton of tread on them. i'm thinking about putting them on my truck soon, since mine are pretty bald.

I need some heavier duty tires. What is the load rating? The price is much better than the BFG A/t KO. I need a load range D which would be perfect. I would probably go with the 275 70 18, if I can get them. I have until mid August, so I have time to look.
They look good IMO.

ricfly - the 275/70/18s only come in load range E. Im not sure if the 275/65/18s come in Ds.

Dinlong - I have been pondering what tires to get for the past 2 months and narrowed it down to the SA 275/70/18s(yours) or the lower load rated 275/65/18s. How much worse is the ride than your factory ride with these tires?? I'm 99.9% sure I want the 275/70s. You could make it 100%!! lol
Thanks!

I have had the 275/70R18s on my truck for about a month now. I haven't installed my leveling kit yet, but they still fit fine. I have an 04 Screw 4x4. Even though they are load range E, which is why I bought them, I keep 50 psi all the way around and couldn't be happier with the ride and performance. They are head and shoulders better than the stock BFG that came on the truck. I do know that the SA 275/65 R18 is a good tire as well, but only comes in a 'P' rating and I wanted an 'LT' rating. Hope this helps!
