TPMS Question ... Please Help

Did Ford change anything from the 2004 to 2007 TPMS?

I am asking as my wife has a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer Premier (with TPMS) and she needs new tires. For less than $150 more that just replacing the 17" tires, we can get Chrome Clad 18" take-offs with tires from a 2007 Ford Edge and she really likes the look of the chrome Edge wheels.

Basically, I am wanting to know if the two systems are compatible or if the 2007 Edge wheels use a different style TPMS than her 2004 Mountaineer has on it?

Thanks for the help.

I believe all of the 07's went to a sensor mounted on the wheel using a metal band while the older vehicles used a sensor that was part of the valve stem. So, the two systems should not interchange.

Yes, they are different, and no, they won't interchange.

So the light will come on then with the new wheels or does she have the "indirect" system that works with the ABS system on the 2004 truck? How would I be able to check?

I just looked closer at her valve stems and they are not standard vavle stems so I am guessing that she has the direct system mounted on the vavle stems as you said is probably the case above.

What options do I have with the new wheels/tires now since the two systems are not compatible? Add the stock valve stems to the new wheels, remove the light from the dashboard. or what else?

The only real option you have is to install the TPMS sensors into aftermarket wheels. This may or may not work, won't know until you try.

Does anyone know if the Valve stem TPMS sensors will fit on the newer style Ford wheels that they use the bands on? I am hoping that I just add the sensors to the valve stems on the new wheels.

They will fit, but they will not work. Totally different sensors that operate on totally different principals.

So even if the bands are removed from the 2007 wheels and the valve stem sensors from the 2004 wheels that are programmed for the truck are put on the 2007 wheels, the sensors will not work?

Maybe I was wrong, I honestly don't know if the stem mounted sensors will fit and seal in a 2007 wheel. I know that they are not interchangeable between each other, the stem mount and band mount.
