coating wheels
I was wondering if any one has clear coated there polished aluminom wheels. I was planning on getting some and having them coated for easy cleaning. Just wondering if any body has done this or has any tips. Thanks in advance.
The clear coating on a wheel can be very nice and very very simple to clean. A few things to watch out for:
Do not use a powdercoat clearcoat, these will turn yellow and peel after time. And if you get a rock chip on your wheel, which is impossible to avoid under daily driving, it will yellow and spread.
Stay away from the aerosol clear, they will not last and will end up maiking a mess of your wheel
What I do recommend using a ceramic clear coat. Certain companies will spray these. There is one in Southern Ca named Specialized Coatings. This ceramic clear will not crack, dis-color or fade as it chemically bonds to your wheel unlike the others. You do loes a little of the shine, as with any clear, but the benefits are well worth it.
I know all of this because I used to work for Budnik Wheels for 2 years, they are a high-end custom billet wheel manufacturer. I have a set of 20" cleared billet wheels in my garage, I will try and post some pictures later today to show you how the clear looks on the wheel. I hope this was of help, I figured I would chime in since I have good knowledge of this.

Hay thanks for the reply, yeah I wasnt planning on doing it from a rattle can, That would be a nice choice if there was a place around here that does that. Do you think having a shop shoot it with a gun will cause any problems latter becouse thats is what im thinking I will just do.
If you are referring to an automotive paint shop shooting regular paint clear (like on the outside of your car), then no, I would not do that. It will not last, especially with the weather and conditions the wheels will have to hold up to.
The ceramic clear is the way to go, and I have seen many daily driven cars with it and they have been really happy and it has lasted already a few years. Look it up on the internet and see if there is someone in your area that sprays the ceramic clear coat.
