Re-cal ABS for tire size

Re-cal ABS for tire size

My local shop says that I need to get my ABS re calibrated for the much larger tires I'm running so I call the dealership and they tell me that its 90$ for this and there is no guarantee that my computer will take the update. If it doesn't work I'm out 90$ is there any way to tell if my computer will take the update. The truck is an 01 screw 5.4 4x4. Any advice would be great I did some searching but couldn't find anything useful.

the tires are already on the truck actually, my friend and I stuffed some 315/85/16's on without a problem its been like this for a few months but a state trooper here in Maine saw it and recommended that I have it adjusted if not I might get towed.

Somone gave you some misinformation. I never had mine calibrated when I went to 33's or 35's. I know people with 38's that never had their ABS recalibrated.

I agree that I don't see any reason for getting it done. I just want to do it so that if I get pulled over I will have a permit stating that my ABS has been adjusted and police won't be able to tow my vehicle. maybe I need to check on this some more but its also what I was told by the mechanic at the garage.

the only thing i`v read on some 4 x 4 sites is...if you go 10% larger than stock,you should get ABS recal....but who does

i`ll be going 22" rims/305 tire i think...i have stock tires 265-70-17....17" rims.... anyone want to figure that out

I agree but I guess it all comes down to the computer, does anyone see why it wouldn't be able to take the update? Maybe the tire size is too big to work?

The dealer can only recalibrate your speedometer for certain size tires. If you buy an aftermarket computer tuner (like Superchips, Hypertech, etc) you can recalibrate your computer for different sizes and gear ratios. I really do not think the ABS is an issue and I don't think that there is any recalibration available for it. I may be wrong. All I can say is I have read thousands of posts here and at FTW about trucks with larger tires ranging from 33's to 46's and I've never read a single post about any problems with the ABS system.

here is an excerpt from the Maine state inspection book online

If the size of any tire is changed beyond the range of tires recommended by the manufacturer on a vehicle that is equipped with an anti-lock braking system, the vehicle’s computer and/or other appropriate components must be changed, re-programmed or modified so that the vehicle is synchronized to the new tire size. This change must be documented, and that documentation must be kept with the vehicle. The documentation must include, at a minimum:

If you don't have the ABS recalibrated for the larger tire size (most people don't), there's always the risk of legal issues stemming from this if you get into an accident. On many newer vehicles, the ABS system monitors the rotational speed of the tires through wheel speed sensors. Changing to an oversize taller diameter tire ‘will’ cause the tires to rotate at a slightly slower speed compared to the stock tire size. A significantly larger tire could potentially have an adverse effect on the ABS systems ability to detect, minimize and or prevent skids.

ok i have been drinking a bit but...265=30" tire? so add the 10% 33"=305...so i should be on the fence as they say...wendall....help!!!!! am i close???
not that im worried...im guessing guys with bigger tires are not going to be traveling as fast as guys dropped....ya im sure there are some of you crazys out there doing 100mph on a 6"+ lift..but not many as to the bagged or dropped guys...this is interesting post...so im hoping for some more input

i'm also from Maine, and for some reason there seems to be a law against anything you want to do to mod your truck, even if its pure appearance. I went to a dealer last weekend who refused to put 285/65/18 on the wheel, claiming it was illegal and told me I had to go to the dealer due to the ABS reconfig.

ABS only cares about the difference between wheel speeds. If you keep all 4 tires the same size, ABS won't care. Now, engine, transmission might, but ABS doesn't care.

I agree. It seems Maine has passed a law on something that is a non-issue.
