Thud when braking

You can hear a thud in the front and feel it lightly through the floor board. It happens only when you first go to apply the brakes and it is just a single thud. Now if I went and pressed the brakes very slowly and softly it won't do it. Also if I press the brakes and let go and immediately press them again it will not do it. So it does it at any speed and when I go to normally press the brake and makes the thud just as soon as I start to apply the brakes. It does not seem to be braking awkwardly at all. What do you all think it is.

Pull the wheels and do a visual inspection; mounting bolts, pads, hub nut, and even ball joints.

Radius arm bushing wore out will cause that thump also. Its Y shaped beam on the front alxe to the frame mount. When they go bad it allows the front alxe to shift back and forth especially when you hit the brakes....................

It's most likely in the suspension - not in the brakes. Also, check for loose cargo; a rolling log in the bed would make a clunk like that, too. So would a loose spare.

There is no loose cargo but good thought. I gave you all info of what it was doing but didn't tell you what I have. It's a 97 4x4 5spd 4.6L. My truck doesn't have radius arms though according to haynes. My brothers 93 4x4 does and I know what they look like. Could it be the lower control arm? Also I haven't had time to look around on it. Will do that tomorrow morning. Thinks for the replies.

Thinks for the help. Turns out the two bolts on the left wheel that hold the caliber was slightly loose. When I mean slightly I mean it only took 1/2 a turn to tighten.
