measuring back spacing?

Anyone tell me how to measure the back spacing of my rims? Is it from the inside the rim to outside the rim or the back side of the tire? does the question make any sense?

Backspacing is measured from the mounting surface of the wheel (where it bolts to the hub) to the rear edge of the wheel. Like this.

No, it was a good question, and a very good answer. Too many posts around here show that people really don't understand what back spacing is or how it can affect their vehicles.

I would like to add my own question now. Is there a source to find what the stock back spacing is? I understand that it may be different from year to year, but it would be cool if there was a chart or table somewhere that provided that kind of info. It would sure help when wheel shopping.
