$1600 for a brake job %#$*(!!!

bought a 1999 f-150 and had the local mechanic ck it out. he informed me that the rear brakes were almost gone and the front brakes had about 30% wear left. i asked for an estimate and then wet myself. is it the norm this day and time to replace all calipers and the rear rotors ? also he estimated over 7.5 hours for labor. i guess i have been living under my rock too long. any input would be greatly appreciated, thanx dennis

ive got a 1998 with 188,000 and i still have the same calipers it came with. if i was you i woud just do the rotors, $1600 is really high for a simple job like that. you might want to try a diff. mechanic

um... is this meineke or what? all that would need replaced is the pads. calipers would not need replaced, and nor would the rotors unless they are warped and your pedal shakes when braking. Also, if it took him 7.5 hours... I think he needs to find a different job. It should take no more than 2 hours to change front and rear brakes.

Half of that prices would be a little high. Sounds like the back only needs attention now.

Yeah, that's a bit much. I know of a Dodge that went to Monroe and had everything new for $1000. He took it back for a grinding noise and the brakes grabbing the next week. And I know 7.5 hours is and engine swap, not brakes!

built54, thanks for the input. there is a little bit of shimmy in the front, right before you completely stop. i just re-looked at the estimate and he did want 7.5 hours. i think we need a second opinion. if the rotors are warped i certainly want to replace, but to tell me without close exam that all need replacing with only 65k miles, don't seem right, thanks again dennis

Yeah, buy all 4 drilled and slotted rotors and new pads, for what, $500? DIY and save a whole bunch!

It use to be that you turn the rotors, not on most late models today. I talk to a ford tech, he told that about on all cars or trucks now you maybe able to turned the rotors once after that they would junk. They are not made like the old stuff years ago. The steel isn`t as good a grade now.I found that its really a waste of time & money to turn rotors. All that I`ve had done the last couple of years. I turned them & 6 months later replaced them, which didn`t save any money.

yah thats definetly really high quote. Should be no more then 600 on parts even if you are getting pretty nice parts, and thats 4 disc pads and rotors. drums ive never priced out before. And your calipers shouldnt need replacement unless they are sticking and wont release properly. only other thing i could see is if the brake lines look like they will fail soon, maybe he is looking to replace those for you too. either way hes charging atleast 600 dollars on labor, which is just ungodly expensive

1,600$?? no way hes ripping you off. more like 400-600$ go to some other mechanics for a second opinion. if he has to take 7.5 hours to do a brake job i wouldnt trust him anyway lol

damn you can get pads for 20 dollars per axle at auotzone, rotors for my truck which is a pain in the *** to find is like 75 per rotor. but you could probley turn them and not buy new ones which would be 10 per rotor and that would be 80 bucks, if it takes anyone over 1 hour to do a break job im sorry unless you was waiting on your rotors to be turned. hell even if your in cali i would drive there just to do your breaks for 1000 lol. but yeah thats very very steep in pricing.
