Backspacing and offset

Alrite i know this is a dumb question, but i thought i understood what backspacing and offset were. Apparently I am wrong. What are they? thanks in advance guys

Backspacing is the distance from where the wheel bolts on to the edge of the wheel i believe. The more backspaing you have, the less the wheel will stick out and vise virsa.
