Im almost ready to switch to CHEVY!
Now that I got your attention. My 03 f150 has 32k miles on it and I need to replace the brakes. Ok I can understand that. but they also tell me that my rotors are rotted out! WTF. All in all it is going to cost me like $750. Last time when I had my Flowmaster exhaust replaced the guy told me my undercarriage was pretty rusted out. New Rotors in under 50k miles??????????/
Please give me some advice
Please give me some advice
im from the south so i dont have alot of experience with thick rust, but i had to replace front pads at 29k and soon need to replace the front rotors, im at about 36k now. You can do the work yourself and easily save half on that quote you were given. Find some decent rotors online, ask for help in finding good ones, search around do your research. It isnt that hard to replace brake components on a disc setup.
and if you cant tell mines an 03 also....

rotors are dirt cheap. your getting ripped off. 50 bucks a peice max. seems like a minor reason to be stirred up about. whats up with the undercarrage? what is rotting exactly? ive never seen anything rot out under a truck that new.
Thanks for the response guys I am going to try and post some pics this weekend. Also what are some good routers and where do you order them from. Can I take them to a local shop and have them done for cheaper you think?
im telling you, the front should take maybe 1 hr at the most to put new rotors and pads on, or even faster if all you are doing is rotors... It is sooo easy, just do it yourself.

The quote you got for rotors and pads is a ripoff, even for both axles. If you have a 2wd truck, that may be new rotors pads and bearings, but still that quote is too high. There are plenty of good rotors for $40-100ea and ceramic pads for $50-100/axle. What you pay for labor (DIY, a buddy a case of beer, the local shop) will vary. Avoid cheap rotors with good pads, They'll warp in less than a year.
That said, I replaced the pads and rotors on both my 99 and 03 F-150's around 35k miles, so you are not that far off.

The crossdrilled/slotted are always my choice. There is a seller called R1Concepts who makes them zinc coated for anti rust protection on the hubs. Mine have been on over a year and still ahve that nice new metal appearance. Ordering the OEM rotors off ebay would be foolish. You can pick up some bendix or wagner rotors locally at carquest, napa, or autozone for less and not pay shipping.
If I were you, I'd search for R1Concepts on ebay, just get the fronts for now cuase your rears should be fine, and a set of EBC greenstuff pads and you'll get no brake dust, excellent braking power, and still spend half what that place wanted to charge you. By the way, was that with or without vaseline?
You didn't specify 4x4 or not, but here are the 4x4 rotor fronts:

here are the 2wd:

THe following link is NOT for your truck, but it is the greenstuff pads. I bought mine at pepboys, but this is what they look like and some specs

neck4752,
I just replaced the front rotors and pads on my '01 a few weeks ago. I got the truck with 31k on it and it now has 65k on it. I do not know if the brakes had been previously replaced or not. For reference, I bought my parts at NAPA and used the 'premium' parts as I plan on keeping this for many years and do not feel like doing brakes again too soon. The rotors ran about $55 each and used ceramic pads that were about $85.
Just make sure that if you do it yourself, to clean up and lube the slider bolts for the calipers and use some high temp anti seize where the rotor contacts the hub and you should be good to go
If you look on Tire Rack's website they have Brembo rotors for $40-45 each as another option.

I replaced both of my rotors last year at a cost of $32.00 ea. I got them from Auto Zone and have not had a problem, brake pads I got from Car Quest at $42.00 for the set and again no problem with dust or anything. They are so easy to replace just make sure you pull the pins out of your caliper backet and grease them, that is what releases the pad from the rotor when you take your foot off the brake. Good luck
and you dont need a lift, the bottle jack, or sissor jack that came with the truck is sufficient, you just have to work a little harder. Just sit on the ground, kinda stradle the wheel well and your good to go. Dont forget to support the caliper b.c you can cause damage to the brake lines if you just let the caliper hang by the lines.
